1991 Toyota Landcruiser 3FE

Summary:

There's a reason you see them being used by the UN in all less habitable parts of the world

Faults:

The orig alternator died at 115k, I replaced the alternator with an aftermarket reman'd Bosch unit. This lasted 3 years, fortunately I had a lifetime warranty and replaced it with the same from BapGeon. I'm certain an OEM part would have lasted longer, but I was on a budget.

The original starter was replaced at 120k. I went with Toyota parts on that one... no problems with it since.

The original radiator gave out last summer, there had been no overheating issues until the eruption, LOL. Replaced with OEM, good as new now.

The left front brake caliper needed to be replaced (seized piston) so I replaced both fronts with ake/bono, along with the flexible brake hoses going to the calipers for preventative maintenance.

I've done all the work myself, just as I have on all my vehicles. Everything is very intuitive... like my previous older Mercedes 90's SL.

The worst vehicle I've ever worked on were Ford products, things are placed suspiciously in the way for the home mechanic.

General Comments:

The '91 3FE engine is a true workhorse. There is no timing belt or chain, it's direct drive. Torque is incredible.

You won't win any speed races at stop lights, but that's not what this vehicle is all about.

It's about a solid, go anywhere, durable 4x4 that is rivaled by none.

Some newer Land Cruiser 80 series models may have more power (212 bhp), but they also have some deficits, like head gasket issues that inevitably show up after 100K.

Not so with the 91/92 models.

I love the fact that the truck is roomy enough to fold forward the rear 2nd row seats, and you are able to sleep in the back with the tailgate open or closed if you're short enough.

It's just a great feeling to know that the vehicle you're driving has tractor-like reliability, and is able to get you through situations that would halt most all other vehicles.

The only con I have is that I've been told that the 2nd row seating for larger passengers can be uncomfortable on long journeys, Toyota seems to have addressed this issue with newer FJ100 series.

1991 Toyota Landcruiser

Summary:

I love it's reliability and looks

Faults:

I just changed the distributor. The truck was not starting while the engine was warm.

I replaced the starter too.

The window spoiler and some chrome on the front bumper fell off, also.

General Comments:

The truck drives slow. It will always get you where you want to go, just maybe not as fast as you want to get there.

1991 Toyota Landcruiser Full Time 4WD FJ Gasoline

Summary:

Rough and Ready good Ranch Truck

Faults:

Mulitple alternators replaced. Multiple rotors and brakes replaced. Shaky transfer case. Multiple tires replaced. Multiple fuse modules replaced. Catalytic converter went bad, muffler problems. This car was strong, but also a turd--it really worked hard to pull itself up hills, but had no problem pulling big oak trees out of the woods. It had engine running problems and got terrible gas mileage. I'm still not sure what was wrong with it.

General Comments:

I was a heavy user of this used car in off-roading conditions including, but not limited to, snow driving on unpaved roads, mud driving, pulling trees out of the woods, hauling 55 gallon barrels of fuel and 100 gallon tanks of water in the back, hauling bales of hay and horse feed in the back, hauling firewood, hauling kids, driving 500 miles to San Diego every winter, you name it, this truck did it. But it did not ENJOY doing it...lol.

It had electrical problems that caused it to be very unreliable. For example, the windows could go up and down when the car was off and key was out of ignition... this was not good. I went through 3 alternators in 1.5 years with this car--which left me stranded each time. Finally I got a Toyota alternator through Ebay instead of generic, and that fixed the problem!

It should be noted that I am VERY hard on vehicles and they usually have little to no value left when I am done with them.

Bottom line, if it can't stick it out with me for two years, it's crap.

Sounds like it's crap anyway.

I am disappointed in your review of the vehicle. You should realize that you are blaming the vehicle for your lack of knowledge of it's operation. You say it will pull a stump, but it will struggle to climb a small hill. You have traction control which will not allow it to spin the tires, therefore when you floor it to try to get up the hill faster, it is spinning all four tires, therefore all four wheels have brakes applied to them, and your engine will be revving and struggling to out power the brakes. Hence, you are wearing out brakes and rotors. And the electrical problem? you get what you pay for. Don't blame Toyota for an aftermarket part failure. You own the best vehicle in the world, so calm down and let the truck do it's job.

Summary:

25K is just a bargain for this baby!

Faults:

My muffler has to be tightened, but it is a very tough, sturdy and smooth truck.

General Comments:

This truck is a very tough sturdy, and smooth truck. Great for off-roading or four-wheeling. It is practically indestructible.
