1985 Toyota MR2 1.6

Summary:

Outstanding grownup's car

Faults:

Not a darn thing.

Replaced the muffler 3-4 times.

Parking brake seized up some time around 1990 from lack of use.

General Comments:

This car is an adult go cart. Remember those things? Serious adult fun to drive. Just did a 4,500 mile round trip to Yuma, AZ. That is when the A/C died. Bummer. Speakers have died, not used much, probably dry rot. My wife's car! Not really sure whom she would pull out of a burning garage first, her toy, or me. Her toy can go longer and harder than I can; guess that answers that! Hope Toyota comes out with a replacement.

Have used Amsoil in it from day one. Gets 29-30 MPG around town, 35-37 on my last trip to Yuma and Las Vegas, back to St. Louis. Average of 73 mph on the cruise control.

I don't drive it when the salt hits the road, until 4-5 days of rain after the last snow fall. Kept in a garage. For being 28 years old, we would drive it any where. Going to D.C. with it next week. No, it is not for sale; remember the burning garage metaphor?

1985 Toyota MR2 3u-a ??? 1.4 ???

Summary:

Fun to drive, but a bit sluggish

Faults:

The story for me is I once owned a OPEL GT, (I was young) no matter how much money I spend and time in the shop, there's always something you had to fix, just to keep the car running. I just test drove an 1985 MR2, felt just like that OPEL, and this car had over 8,000 dollars in professional receipts, was as clean as you could ask for, and still there was money to be spent and things to be fixed. If you buy this car you better be well off or learn to be your own mechanic.

General Comments:

All others comments say it all, its fun.

1985 Toyota MR2 1.6 DOHC

Summary:

An absolute delight to own!

Faults:

I haven't had to replace anything.

General Comments:

I was actually looking for a CRX Si that wasn't riced (which is almost impossible), or a turbo MK2. I found this 1 owner car and had to go look at it.

The original paint was great and the inside was like new and still smells new. All power accessories work. This car was garaged all of its life by the original owner.

I live in the south so there isn't a trace of rust. I only drive it on nice warm days, but I LOVE it! I can't say enough about it. I plan on leaving it all original.

1985 Toyota MR2 1.6 4age

Summary:

Fun weekend toy, good daily driver.

Faults:

Normal wear, had to change the timing belt, new thermostat, usual tune-ups, keep in mind it's almost a 20 year old car. Had to replace a couple of valve cover gaskets, injector time switch.

General Comments:

It is an extremely reliable car, it hasn't let me down yet in all these years.

The Mr2 handles very well because of the Mid-engine layout. The Engine although only 112 hp, has enough rev-ability to make it a fun runabout. My only gripe about it is the lack of comfort the seats offer when making long distance trips, but hey you shouldn't be driving an Mr2 across the country now should you?

1985 Toyota MR2 1.6 normally aspirated

Summary:

A high-performance toy

Faults:

The valve cover gasket is currently leaking oil.

Interior leather on the steering wheel and shifter boot has started to crack.

Recently, a part of the exhaust system just before the muffler rusted through and needed replaced.

The clutch is starting to wear and needs replaced. The clutch is very old, however, and I am surprised it took this long to wear badly.

General Comments:

I got this car over the summer. I have owned several cars before, and driven many. I can honestly say that I have never driven anything which was more fun. It has more than enough power, and acceleration is phenomenal for a four-cylinder with 120 horsepower.

This car handles perfectly. There is no body roll, and it is most fun on twisty roads. The steering response is instantaneous, and the car has all the traction in the world. If you do lose traction, the center of gravity is right by your right elbow, and the car will just oversteer (the back end slides out from behind you).

I though my last car was fun to drive. I was definitely wrong. It is not possible to tell someone how wonderful this car is, to fully appreciate the fun of a lightweight two-seater, they must go for a ride in it. And to truly appreciate the joy of a mid-engine with rear-wheel drive, you must take one for a drive.

The seats are fairly comfortable, and there is more than enough legroom, although the pedals are small and close together. Shoe size 13 is about the biggest that would fit. Power steering is absent, and also completely unnecessary.

I don't think you could get a car which would be more fun to drive without paying over $100,000.

How much horsepower does a stock 1985 Toyota MR2 have?

24th Nov 2009, 11:59

I am thinking of getting a 1985 NA Mr2 for my first car (17). It has only 160xxx kms on it. How long do you think it would run? And what kinda problems could I run into? (tranny, heads)

Thank you.
