2009 Toyota Prius Base 1.5

Summary:

Love it, love it, love it!!!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

The gas mileage is awesome. Never get anything under 43 mpg... I can get up to 53 mpg with it.

It is very comfortable, it's no Caddy, but it's comfortable for what it is. VERY smooth. Have gotten 2 speeding tickets in the past couple months apart. 68 mph in a 45 zone, and 85 mph in a 55 zone... it rides very nice :) I go down the highway doing 88 mph like it could do it all day. It doesn't seem to be stressed, and handles well going so fast, and is still getting great gas mileage as well, over 40 mpg.

I love the fact that the motor shuts off when it's not needed. I buzz around town all the time with my motor off and saving gas, and being as quiet as a church mouse. All my friends love it!

The gas tank, rather bladder, can be a pain to put gas in it when it's in cold weather. FYI... you have to put in at least 3 gallons of gas in order for the gas gauge to register the new gas.

I would buy 100 more... I love it,... buy it, you'll love it too.

There's ample room throughout the car, and the fact that the back seats go down is great. I put the back seats down, and take my Rottweiler with me everywhere.

I love the fact that from empty I can fill it for 20$ :)

I forgot to mention how this car is in the snow. GREAT!!! Going forward is awesome. Just step on the gas and the traction control takes over and away you go. I pass people on the highway during snow all the time.

Stopping is another issue. Because of the generators at each wheel, stopping can be tricky. The tires seem to lock up and I slide down the road or into an intersection. You have to train yourself to just BARELY step on the brake pedal to gradually slow yourself down, and you're fine.

2009 Toyota Prius Hybrid

Summary:

Not all it's cracked up to be

Faults:

The battery packs had to be replaced due to being defective, luckily it was covered by the warranty, otherwise it would have cost thousands.

The brakes always felt spongy, now I have heard about this recall that's going on and I would be afraid to drive it if I still had it, but luckily I traded it in for something else.

General Comments:

The car was great on gas obviously, though I never got what the sticker promised. I usually averaged 40 or so. It isn't as efficient on the highway because it keeps using the gas engine.

It was very comfortable and handled well. Poor visibility in rear, though.

I really questioned the feel of the brake and gas pedals, I never liked the electronically controlled stuff in cars. Looks like Toyota is having some trouble with that now. I would just rather have a good solid cable in between the pedal and the brakes, not some electronic relay that could short out with interference.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

2009 Toyota Prius

Summary:

Dangerous in snow, ice, water on the road

Faults:

Engine shuts off when the wheels slip on water, snow or ice.

Almost got me killed, but only twice.

General Comments:

If you are looking to buy a Prius, my guess is it's because of the gas mileage. If so, the money you save in gas, use to buy an insurance policy, especially if you live anywhere you might get snow, ice or rain on the road.

Once the wheels start slipping, the engine shuts off and the car losses momentum and will stop, DEAD. Dead in, not able to move, possibly on a hill, possibly with traffic coming at highway speeds and you can't even get to the shoulder of the road. But this only happened to me whenever it snowed.

When this happened to me, I almost got rear-ended by a tractor trailer making speed to get up the hill. If this wasn't a loaner car, while my truck was being repaired, I'd have left that car in a ditch and hitched to work everyday.

This is a dangerous situation with this car and you need to be aware of it BEFORE you buy one. What may be deemed a safety feature by some at Toyota equates to a life threatening situation to others.

First off, I am an educator for Toyota in the Chicago Region. I present safety and accident procedures seminars for first responders and fire departments as well as hybrid and auto tech seminars each month for the general public.

The Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) available on the '09 Prius does not shut down the gas engine completely and stop the car. It is not designed to do this.

The VSC is designed to reduce throttle input and apply the brakes through the ABS system to only slow the tires enough to give them an opportunity to regain their grip, at which point the VSC system releases the brakes and boosts throttle input to the previous level.

The VSC will only slow the vehicle to essentially a stop when the vehicle is moving at a very low speed, such as when you are starting to move from a complete stop and the tires cannot get grip.

An example of when this might happen is when a person is attempting to enter traffic and the road conditions are slippery. If the driver accelerates too hard and the tires slip, the VSC will come into effect, slowing the vehicle. This is not a problem with the VSC or the vehicle, it is because the system, through a series of sensors, realizes the conditions are possibly unsafe at that attempted wheel speed/throttle input.

In any event, the electric portion of the Hybrid Synergy Drive would still be providing power, although at a lower input than the gas engine, and it would keep the vehicle moving. Only by applying the brakes could the vehicle be brought to a complete stop.

I have driven every hybrid produced by Toyota in the last five years and have never experienced this situation. I even have VSC on my personal Sienna van and it does not behave this way (speaking for both a hybrid and a standard vehicle).
