1986 Toyota Supra J-Spec Sport 3.0 I6 DOHC 24Valve

Summary:

Best car ever... 'stang killer for under 6k!:)

Faults:

My clutch master cylinder constantly leaks and I am too cheap and lazy to replace it.

The A/C doesn't work, (My fault).

I did a full top-end rebuild at 110,000 even though nothing was wrong with it just to be safe and get more power.

She has been modified a lot since I got her, and nothing has gone wrong yet.

General Comments:

This is the best car I have ever driven, and I've had quite a few nice ones... I wouldn't sell it for anything... and I've been offered $10,000 at a car show.

You just have to love paying $5000 for a car with a non-turbo, 24valve, DOHC straight six and stomping all over V8 mustangs and some vettes after a few hours in the driveway and for less than $600 in parts... oh, and not to mention a top speed of 157mph... not bad at all for 1986.

She is very fast, handles great, and is very dependable... not bad... oh, and did I mention still 23mpg with mods? ¿Sweet isn't it?

1986 Toyota Supra 3.0 inline 6

Summary:

The best cars available for the age

Faults:

Had to replace the head gasket when I bought this car, but ever since I have had no problems. The seats have a bit of wear, but this expected with this old of a car.

General Comments:

This is a great car. It has 200hp with no upgrades, and I have customized it with an intake and exhaust system. This car is FAST.

1986 Toyota Supra Coupe 3.0 Non_Turbo

Summary:

A street racing machine

Faults:

The previous owner of this car babied it, but once I got it and started to drive it hard the head gasket went on it. Seats are worn badly. But other than that she is a solid as a rock.

General Comments:

This car is surprisingly fast for the year it was built.

200Hp at the wheels.

Handles like it is on rails.

And you can do a lot to them.

1986 Toyota Supra

Summary:

A huge disappointment

Faults:

Head Gasket Leak.

Coolant Leak.

Power Steering Hose.

Tires.

Window Defogger.

Seatbelt.

Brake Light.

General Comments:

This car broke my heart. When I bought it I thought I had found a reasonably priced, nice-looking, retro 80's machine. Instead I got a completely unreliable car with repair costs greater than the original sticker price and a one hour walk when it overheated in the middle of nowhere. I strongly recommend no one buy this car. It is indeed very comfortable to sit in and has plenty of little gadgets. However, once you realise that the original designers made horrible flaws in terms of reliability you will agree that this car is not worth the effort. When I was looking for used cars I was advised Toyotas were very reliable; this car is the exception to the rule.

Because the valve heater was made of plastic, which melts and affects the head gasket. Dealers make money from this.

1986 Toyota Supra NON-turbo

Summary:

86.5 - Quick and Comfortable

Faults:

The car ran hot for a year, but never overheated. The dealer couldn't determine the problem. Finally, a local mechanic determined it was the head gasket at 75,000 miles.

The stock Goodyear Gatorbacks are horrible in rain/snow. I recommend RIKEN tires on this car. They don't last forever, but are great if you use the car all year round.

General Comments:

The car is extremely comfortable on long trips. The driver seat has all kinds of lumbar supports.

The digital climate control is my favorite feature. Works just like a programmable home thermostat.

With the stock exhaust system, you can't even tell the car is on! A very quiet sports car at 200 hp.

I agree with it being nice and quiet, I'm looking at purchasing this very car and when I heard it running and even driving around I really couldn't hear it barely at all, you could sneak up on somebody with this thing. It isn't quiet when you punch it though!

My name is Kevin, and I have an uncle that wants to purchase a 1986 Toyota Supra, and he wants me to work it off. I was kind of thinking of not doing it, but then I talked to my other uncle who knows about cars, and he told me to get it, and we will work on it in our new car modification garage/business. Your comments that I have read, make me want the car more. Thanks.

Well I bought the car (see second post) and I have a blown headgasket, but it has been a blast to drive (even though it wasn't running full potential) and everybody likes it. I was expecting the blown headgasket when I bought it so I'm not drawn back by it. Thankfully I like cars enough to do the fix myself and aside from machining the process should be relatively inexpensive compared to having a toyota dealer do it. watch for common signs of a blown head gasket and get it checked and replaced if need be when purchasing a supra; once that's done you'll have a great time!
