1987 Toyota Supra Stocked Non-turbo 3.0 liter V6 DOHC

Summary:

This car is very awesome

Faults:

The engine died when I was going to turn the car at a stop sign.

General Comments:

The car is very fast though it is not a turbo. It is light blue and no has no rust, which makes it look nice. I burned a lot of dudes racing at night. I did a 360 in the middle of the road while going too fast around the corner.

1987 Toyota Supra Turbo 3.0 twin cam turbo

Summary:

Awesome bang for the buck!

Faults:

At time of purchase I was made aware of an overheating problem due to a cracked head gasket. Knowing this I still purchased the car - because of information obtained through research I knew this has been a common problem. I immediately repaired it and since (even though not a long time) it has driven like a dream.

The trunk hatch though allows water in, but this may not be a manufacturer defect.

General Comments:

I believe this car is an excellent car that should last a long time.

Anyone I've known to own this car (3 people) have driven it beyond 350,000 miles. What a deal!

Can't compare to Toyota quality.

Any advice would be appreciated. I have a 1987 Toyota Supra with 150K on it... engine blown, head and gasket were replaced @ 100K... had constant problems with overheating after that..

Would like to put it back on the road as I love the body style... been thinking about a rebuilt or used engine (would not rebuild this particular engine, several dealer shops could not solve the overheating problem, I suspect a block problem), but don't want to go through the previous hassle again.

What would you advise.. a newer engine than a 1987? Seems like what I've been reading they are all prone to head gasket problems and overheating!

I also have the problem with water in the trunk... new seals? Thanks for your comments!

Gary.

To respond to the comment on replacing the engine, I would find a rebuilt engine with around 100,000 miles. The engine in a 1987 Supra (7mge) is a bullet-proof engine besides it's little head gasket problem. I have seen these engines run to 300,000 miles and still smoke the tires if you give it the "loud pedal". Hope this helps someone out. P.S.- A supra is a good camaro killer, so go give them hell!

Getting a rebuilt engine with 100k miles on it... OK. Genius idea.

1987 Toyota Supra 3.0 non turbo

Summary:

I love it!!!

Faults:

The master cylinder broke. I bought the car with a broken master cylinder and a lightly damaged front. Best $100 I ever spent.

General Comments:

I have a 1999 Honda Accord Coupe. It cannot compare to the comfort of the Supra.

I use the car for delivering pizza, all I do is put gas into it.

I would recommend this car to anyone who likes to drive fast and just cruise for pleasure.

Don't just put gas in it! I own a 1989 Toyota Supra (non-turbo) and I absolutely love it but they do require a deal of maintenence. Be sure to check the oil often and change it every 3000 miles or so. Use 20w 50 on the oil. Also check the engine coolant levels often and put in a fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank every now and then. Mine is now 13 years old and has 216,000 miles on it but I've never had any serious problems with it. I had to replace the radiator and repair a few of the electrics in the doors but all in all it is superb. Eventually I plan to fully restore it and have it modified into a stage 3 street racer. What fun!

1987 Toyota Supra Turbo 3.0 turbo

Summary:

Great car

Faults:

Replaced the head gasket.

Timing belt broke at 140kmh, no damage to the internals.

Replaced a power steering hose.

Replaced the right front brake calliper twice.

Replaced the water pump twice.

Radiator replaced.

General Comments:

All the above mentioned work was performed by myself in my driveway with the most basic tools.

Considering the car is almost 14 years old and driven daily even in winter, I think it was a bargain.

Did you use aftermarket power steering hose for the leak??

Could you tell me which brand which works as far as fitting?
