I have driven this truck to 49 states and all of Canada. Never a problem.

Drove it from Florida to Alaska's north slope. Never a problem.

Rally raced it on the empty roads of the Yukon. Launched it into the air and slammed it back down on landing. Beat the crap out of it. Never a problem.

Did I mention 60,000 miles of 5000 lbs trailers at 80mph? Never a problem.

I love my Tacoma like a man loves his dog.

I'll be loyal to the end.

Exactly right. I have the same truck, but a '98 standard shift.

I just got back a while ago from hauling enough scrap cement blocks that I am truly glad I don't know how much they weighed. Had to drive OVER more blocks and dirt to get to where they needed to be unloaded.

Last week, I drove it across a 2 foot or so deep creek to gather stones for a landscaping project, and next month I'm taking it on an 2200 mile round trip to Florida and back, as I have done many times before (in between off roading it and generally beating the hell out of it).

I get between 21 and 23 miles to the gallon through all of this; fantastic for a 4 wheel drive v-6 truck. I have put exactly ZERO dollars in repairs in it.

I have the same truck, and I bought it used a couple of years ago. It's automatic, but it runs great and I have had no problems, but for a valve set on the gear box that clogged due to an unnoticed oil leak. Fixed in no time, and up and running again. I thought to trade it in, but my wife and I just decided to trade in her car (a newer Suzuki) and keep my old faithful truck for 4 or 5 more years.

The only thing I have had problems with is the starter. I was actually out in the desert playing in the sand dunes and when I came home I noticed that the starter was having trouble. I think that the starter must have got sand in it and started to wear away the starter. I replaced it and good as new.

General Comments:

Great truck. I use it for everything from camping to 4 wheeling to my surf mobile. The only complaint I have is that on long road trips the seats are not the most comfy. Great power and the 4wheel drive system is excellent. I have the auto hubs making it much easier to shift in and out of 4 wheel.

Summary:

A reliable truck with excellent performance-The Best

Faults:

Rear suspension was a little wimpy when we purchased the truck. (we upgraded the suspension, and no further complaints)

Stock CD player slowly grew more and more sensitive and skips even on the slightest corner or bump. (no biggee, we listen to tapes or radio. CD's on highway hardly skip)

General Comments:

We have taken this truck to our mechanic for regular maintenance. Truck has never left us stranded. We can always tell when something is going bad before it does and we get it fixed right away. This truck was fairly pricey, but worth every penny. Still receive compliments on it to this day. If you treat these trucks with respect, they will last forever. We have quite a bit of miles on it, and even our mechanic is amazed at how "young and fresh" it still looks and acts. Well put together and a nice solid unit. Gas mileage in our V6 is about 24 MPG.

I have a 99, and at best on the interstate with cruise control, 20.5 MPG. What are you doing to get that fuel MPG?

Best I have ever done is 19 MPG with the cruise!

Check into highway all season radials for mileage with the highest inflation allowable. Not oversized tires. For MPG, I put nice Michelins on my full size. Better ride as well. I don't off road or need real aggressive truck tread.
