1999 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0 gas

Summary:

Fantastic car, would buy again in a second

Faults:

Trunk release doesn't always close properly, so you have to close it 3 or 4 times.

Have had to replace the batteries in the remote twice.

ABS sensors in both rear wheels have had to be replaced.

General Comments:

This car is amazing - I got it used and it is still tight like the day it came off the line. Handles really well.

One thing I don't like about it is that the windshield washer fluid tank is quite small - I had to refill it approx. once a week all winter.

The car is fun to drive and has quite a lot of pep.

Would buy another one again in a second, just maybe not white as I live on a farm!

1999 Volkswagen Beetle GLS TDI

Summary:

A great choice. I love it

Faults:

"Gone wrong" to me means items that are not wear and tear parts one would expect to repair/replace at the mileage they failed.

1 copper seal ring at rear brake hose banjo bolt (the original was zinc and corroded out, causing brake fluid leak). Cost me 25 cents to fix.

Rear brakes do stick if not cleaned after the winter salt driving season.

Coolant leaks due to fatigued O-rings.

Brake light switch (twice; per manufacturer recall; free)

Window regulator clips (replaced for free by VW)

General Comments:

The Bug is so much roomier inside than it looks from the outside. It is a great commuter car or long-distance trip car for two people (not because of the seating, but because of the luggage space the number of people is limited).

The seats are comfortable and I love the torque and fuel economy of the TDI turbo diesel engine. Take that, you Hybrids! LOL.

It has a low centre of gravity and (with upgraded shocks and struts) can be pushed around corners as if it ran on rails.

It is my everyday driver, I pull my trailer with it (loaded with gravel, fire wood etc.) and it still has the original clutch.

Whatever you do - never, ever, skimp on preventive maintenance. This is not a farm tractor diesel, but a precision piece of engineering. It needs fully synthetic oil and changing the timing belt at the specified interval is vital.

1999 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0

Summary:

Well I look cute in it, but a lot of problems

Faults:

Well I have had this car for about five months, and wow I got it at the end of December 2007.

When I purchased the car the tan seats were an awful mess. Spent $100 for cleaning them. Then $80 for new seat covers & mats.

About a month and a half later (February) had to replace the struts, but got ripped off by Firestone (Boycott them), when they charged $400 to replace struts, but just replaced the strut mounts.

Then, in April the head gasket blew. Another $600.

Now in May, ball joints broke, new rotors front and back, brakes front and back, new collinder (I dunno the spelling, but something to do with the brakes), check engine light on, and the sensors are fogged. About $1,000 there.

The interior door handles peel. Hard to clean. Idles high. Not very much pick-up. Trunk hard to shut (have to try about 10 times). Have to hold button down forever to get trunk to open.

Interior door buttons for truck, etc. fell into the door. Sometimes the passenger side window is extremely slow to roll up.

Hard to tell if you need oil (dip stick is oddly made).

Too under the hood is compact and cannot find anything.

Alarm goes off if you don't start your car in like 1 minute.

General Comments:

One good thing about this car is I look cute driving it. LOL.

Seats fold down easily and can fit a 42' inch TV in it.

Good in the snow.

Large dash to put stuff on.

Fairly good on gas.

However, the back is cramped and not such a good idea when you have a 3 year old and the bulky car-seat. She can touch the back of my head.

The front is very roomy. I like the way the seats go down in order to get in the back seat.

Also, I like how the radio stays on after you take out the keys until you open the door.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

Sounds like you bought a lemon that someone else abused. don't buy a fixer upper if you don't know what a brake caliper is. I have a 99 beetle I bought new runs great.
