1986 Volkswagen Golf Wolfsberg Edition

Summary:

The fast and the ugly

Faults:

The levers that release the bucket seats (in order to get into the back seat) have snapped off.

The button that opens the hatch has broken.

There is no emergency brake anymore, as the lever has broken.

The windows do not roll down anymore and the sunroof leaks.

If the RPM gauge fall lower than 2000, the oil pressure buzzer/light come on.

There is an awfully cold breeze that flows from under the dash; it could be a vent that is stuck open.

The floor heating does NOT work. However, you can still use the vents for heat.

General Comments:

Mechanically, this is one of the best and most durable cars I have ever owned. I haven't had to worry about anything suddenly breaking down on me.

The Golf handles beautifully. You can dodge obstacles at VERY high speeds, and it corners great. I've had this car going about 190 km/h down the highway. It's a quick little car.

The gas mileage is unbelievable! On a full tank, you can drive about 1200 km (without stopping) at a speed of 130 km/h if the terrain is right. You couldn't ask for a more economical car.

Cosmetically, this car is starting to take a turn for the worst. If I had the time to fix the little details, this car would probably last forever.

1986 Volkswagen Golf Wolfsberg Edition 1.8

Summary:

The best economy fun there is!

Faults:

After buying the car from an old lady I replaced the clutch cable, right front drive axle and battery.

Since then the cruise control has disappeared, the oil pressure light always comes on and the drivers seats padding dosen't pad much at all.

General Comments:

I have always loved VW's and I was very excited to finally get my first one. This car gets incredible gas mileage and it starts like a dream even in -20 weather.

These cars are so easy to work on and parts are abundant. Sadly this car is getting near the 250k mark and things are slowly starting to go, but I will keep it running until I hit the 300k mark, then rebuild the beast.

This Wolfsburg edition Golf is a great luxurious and sporty car that is very practical and fun. I am thinking of rebuilding the engine and keeping this car as something for my son and I to work on together... possibly a turbo Golf???

1986 Volkswagen Golf GL 1.6 diesel

Summary:

Basic bullet proof transportation

Faults:

Other than the usual maintenance stuff like brakes, struts and exhausts that need replacing once in a while, nothing really.

General Comments:

I loved the car, it was very cheap to run and maintain.

It was very slow, but still fun to drive.

I would still driving the heck out it if it weren't for that sad day when it was t-boned by a red light runner.

1986 Volkswagen Golf Diesel 1.6 diesel

Summary:

Worth its weight in gold plated latmin

Faults:

A/C clutch gave out at about 200,000.

Replaced right side axle due to a bad C/V joint at 205,000.

Struts at 120,000 miles.

Heater flap to control the heat position, (defrost, vents or floor) broke loose around 100,000 miles. Time consuming repair because the heater core has to be removed.

Factory radio dead around 120,000 miles.

General Comments:

This has been an excellent car and worth every penny I paid when it was new.

The body is a bit rough now due to many winters in Iowa and the road salt eventually gets to everything no matter how much you wash it.

The interior still looks new except for a small tear in the drivers seat.

With almost 220,000 miles, we're still running on the original clutch, and still getting over 40mpg on average.

BUT, it's getting about time to replace this car, I think the fuel injector pump is going out, and the clutch is getting thin. If the body was still in good shape, I wouldn't hesitate to fix these items, but at this point, I'm afraid the body will give out before anything mechanical.

I will probably replace it with a new Golf TDI.

The TDI engines are superb. Make sure you go to www.tdiclub.com sometime, a North American site.
