A hella sick, speedy car!

General Comments:

I love this car, if I had a chance to buy another car, I would buy a brand new Golf! The interior has a luxurious feel, and is quite comfortable. The exterior is, well awesome! The exterior outdoes any Honda I've ever seen. The car takes crashes well too, I'm sad to report. But repair wasn't that expensive. The car handles quite well for it's stock suspension. Unlike most hatchbacks, that are top heavy and are prone to roll over. The golf isn, t that top heavy at all. Overall, this car has been the best car I have ever owned.

1997 Volkswagen Golf CL 1.8L

Summary:

A higher priced, higher quality car

Faults:

My Clutch went at 110000 km. Starter needed to be replaced at 115000 km. It also took the battery with it when the starter went, but battery's don't last forever anyways. The door molding started to come off (this appears to be a big problem so I've read),but I put it back on with some 3M double sided tape. Both the high and low tone horns went at the same time and I replaced them. The valve cover gasket leaks on my car and almost all golf/jetta's since the 80's. The front wiper motor went soon after I bought the car, but was replaced free under the used car warranty that came with my car. The passenger seat collapsed on the one side and I had to get another one from the wreckers.

General Comments:

Never take your Volkswagen to the dealership if you can avoid it. I was told about a local garage that works with German and other foreign cars. They are just as good as the dealership mechanics and the price is about 30% less on labor.

I am a real fan of the exterior as it comes stock, but if you want to get performance aftermarket parts to add a little extra flair they are a lot more expensive then for Honda's.

The interior is very attractive and feels and looks like it should be in a more expensive luxury car.

The ride is good, but can tend to be a little bouncy.

Some parts can be expensive, while others can be a lot lower especially with aftermarket parts. So overall I wouldn't agree with people who say the parts are too expensive on Volkswagens.

The car has good pick up for a four cylinder 1.8 L.

Whether to use a dealer must depend on which dealer. Since I have done all my maintenance on our 1997 Golf (193,000 miles) at our local dealer, I have had no problems with the car, (except for the infuriating check engine light that always turns off as I pull into the service bay!) They are honest - don't do unneeded repairs - and always advise me when maintenance is needed before it becomes an issue. It may be more expensive however.

1997 Volkswagen Golf K2

Summary:

The car is Phat... if you know what I mean

Faults:

Had to replace part or a part that was connected to the axle (front). That costed $300.00 USD. At that time, I could not go over 55mph. That was at 70000 miles. Ignition cylinder has been changed 3 times in a two year span. I had a really hard time with that. Power locks did not work at 80000 miles. Door key lock cylinders do not work either at 98000 miles. Front tires usually experience heavy ware.

General Comments:

It is a great little car. Extremely sporty. Its dash is nicely balanced. Just the normal problems for a car with 98000 miles.

1997 Volkswagen Golf GL 4 cylinder

Summary:

Waste of money, mechanical nightmare

Faults:

Side moldings replaced twice..

Heavy front tire wear.

Cold sensor replaced.

Very difficult to start.

Oxygen sensor replaced.

General Comments:

Car performed well for 60000 miles, went downhill after that.

The car is very difficult to start. It takes a minimum of 3 attempts till the engine will finally turn over. I've had this car to 3 different VW mechanics, including the dealership from where it was purchased. None of them can fix the starting problem. It's to the point now where the dealership doesn't even want to be bothered.

I've always had all my services preformed in a timely manner. This car should not be redy for the junk pile yet. But in my opinion it is.

This driver is being a little unfair... he ran the car for 60,000 miles and says it was fine. Then he gets a starting problem. OK, that's annoying and frustrating, but the failure here is not with the car, but with the ineffective service people he has been dealing with.

I think the dealer who groans when he sees this guy enter is probably more abusive (behind his back) than I am going to be...however, this non-starting problem is not just a VW problem.

I think he'll find that if he removes the earth lead and REALLY cleans up the fixing point to shiny bare metal and refits the lead, the problem will be gone.

Alternatively, fix a new earth lead from the engine block (there are plenty of suitable points) to a clean and grease-free point on the body work (or even direct to the battery)

Yes it is frustrating, yes it is annoying, but please direct your frustrations at the people who have failed you. Not the car manufacturer, but the dealers/mechanics.

I don't think his car likes him, mine only has 185K miles and it starts the first time over after sitting for 2 weeks with crazy corroded terminals.

1997 Volkswagen Golf 1.8

Summary:

An inexpensive, unreliable car with extremely high maintenance costs.

Faults:

The first week, the automatic transmission stick fell apart. I've lost the plastic undercarriage cover twice. I had to have a new transmission. I had to replace several components of the fuel/air mix system. The plastic molding on the sides has come off three times. I had to get a new starter. Most recently (and I've stopped having it worked on for the time being), I've been told I need a new ignition system.

General Comments:

I initially liked this car a great deal: it had a lot of pick up, was comfortable, and seemed reliable, except for a few problems with the moldings. Over the last year, I've had endless mechanical problems that, with the exception of replacing the transmission, were not covered by the warranty. The bills for these repairs have been extremely high, and the service has, most recently, been unreliable, i.e., work requested not done or done incorrectly. I have serious concerns that a car that has been well maintained is have so many problems, and that the dealership tends to find things that need repair that aren't necessarily malfunctioning. The cost of the repairs at the dealership, too, are very high. Unfortunately, I would never buy a Volkswagen again. While the Golf is inexpensive, I can't say that it is reliable.
