1998 Volkswagen Golf GL 2.0
Summary:
Too slow, handles good, bad winter car
Faults:
I purchased my VW golf in 2003 after that it was all down hill. Since then I have installed new tires, front brakes 3x rear brakes 2x new rear wheel cylinder, 2 new exhausts, 1 transmission (lost reverse) a new clutch, crank seals, new alternator, new pnuematic air pump for the power locks ($400) new drivers side door latch, and there is that wonderful problem that VW and Audi have when its raining and cold outside plan on walking, these cars never start if its raining however, cold and snow don't effect them.
General Comments:
I do enjoy driving this car in the spring, fall or summer, but as soon as winter rolls around it begins nickle and dimeing me to death, the car is too slow, but does handle well. If I were looking for a new car I wouldn't buy one from VW. Nothing but problems that are never cheap and parts are difficult to find.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

Defiently a fun car to have and drive. The '98 Golf has 86,000 miles and will have to replace the exhaust this month, after replacing it 2 years ago (aluminum). Incredible rust in the ridge below the back tailgate window, as well as underneath the two side mirrors. I attribute that to poor drainage disign. My driver seat cushion as well is sinking in on the left side. Otherwise its been a great car.
