1999 Volkswagen Golf GLS 2.0

Summary:

A load of problems for the most part

Faults:

Well I have had my car for a little less than a year and I have had so many problems out of it.

I have already had the transmission replaced.

My trunk doesn't lock.

I have had my door latch replaced.

The power window motors went out.

The check engine light stays on.

So that is my dilemma.

General Comments:

My car drive drives good and handles well.

I don't like the problems.

The door lock modules are known to develop problems with the solder joints on the circuit board to the wiring harness connector. Just touch the solder joint with a hot soldering iron and it may be fixed.

1999 Volkswagen Golf GTi I4

Summary:

I paid $17,000 for a junker that falls apart on a nearly continuous basis

Faults:

Electric windows failed 3 months after I bought the car. I have had the windows repaired at the Volkswagen dealership and they fail again in a few months. The most annoying part is that the window falls into a down position when it fails. Currently, the passenger window is failed and stuck down (I had to tape plastic over the door!). This will be the seventh window repair!

Rear seatbelt stuck. Something with spooling mechanism.

Sunroof slipped off track and stuck. I managed to fix myself with a screwdriver.

Engine light is currently on. I have spent $700 in repairs to make the light go out, but I am told $500 more is necessary to finish.

Lot of broken plastic items like hinge in glovebox, seat recliner levers, and sunroof track.

General Comments:

Too many failures for a 3 year old car. Windows failing and falling down have resulted in water damage on upholstery.

I bought it new and anticipated only oil and filter changes, but have had to fix a lot more.

The only good thing I can say is that it Starts up and runs reliably.

I am currently demanding a partial refund for this car from Volkswagen of America.

1999 Volkswagen Golf GLS

Summary:

A HUGE waste of money... it is fun to drive, though

Faults:

I have had the heated oxygen sensor replaced three times. This part was recalled by VW, but they assure me that my car was not part of that recall. They offer no reason as to why this part has failed so often in my car.

Several of the buttons on my stereo stopped working. The entire stereo had to be replaced.

I have had the rear window washer pump replaced twice.

I have had the visor replaced once because the plastic hinges simply snapped one day.

A loose spring magically appeared under the drivers seat one day. The repair required that the seat base be replaced.

The alarm failed once and several parts needed to be replaced. It is currently acting up again.

The cup holder is broken and will cost me $130 to fix. The cup holder broke through normal use, not harsh treatment.

The glove compartment is broken and will cost $250 to fix. I opened it one day and one of the arms just snapped.

The passenger-side air vent is broken and will cost $90 to fix.

Currently, the air bag light is on.

General Comments:

This is a very fun car to drive. It is zippy, even at high speeds.

It is has a very spacious interior and it is comfortable.

It is, however, not worth the repairs.

I WAS a very dedicated VW owner, all of that changed with the purchase of this car. I will NEVER buy another VW for the rest of my life.

This was my review... I just have an update:

I was so fed up with my car I decided to file a lemon law suit against VW. They settled out of court and sent me $2500. So, now I have at least one good thing to say about VW, they resolve their legal disputes in a timely manner!

1999 Volkswagen Golf GLS 2.0 four cyl. gas

Summary:

Worst car I ever owned!

Faults:

Upon delivery I discovered parts broken/missing (rear window washer nozzle, battery cover, driver's side headlamp missing parts for aiming adjustment).

Check engine indicator came on for one week. Indicator went out on it's own before I was able to have it looked at by dealer.

Within one month the check engine indicator came on again, staying on for three solid weeks. Car is plagued with hard starting when cold, automatic transmission 'surges' when starting the car while in park with the parking brake on. Transmission goes into 'fail mode', car's transmission stayed in one gear when in drive.

Car's self diagnostic computer gave sixteen distress codes when the dealer's technician ran a diagnostic test. Dealer will not share any more information than I have mentioned.

General Comments:

Looking into filing for a Lemon Law claim. Called VWoA's Customer Relations Department to file a complaint and get a case number. E-mailed the dealer expressing my feelings about my treatment by servicewriter. Notified dealer and VWoA that I am considering filing for relief under the provisions of the Lemon Law. Gave dealer and VWoA 30 days to remedy my car's defect(s) before I file a Lemon Law claim.
