1999 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0, 4 Cylinder

Summary:

The Jetta is a WONDERFUL automobile

Faults:

Air Filter cage was compromised with debris.

The air filter itself is a little hard to get to.

General Comments:

Nothing drastic has gone wrong with the car.

General maintenance has been done to it since I've owned it, and I've put a few new parts on, such as front and rear suspension, new front hubs, rotors, brakes, rear tire bearings. All of those were done at my own leasure, to spice the car up a bit.

New exhaust parts were put on mainly due to rusting out, but hey, it's got 181,000 miles on it.

The car still purs like a kitten and runs most excellently.

I've had only one problem with a window, it was the rear driver side, due to a bent bar inside the door.

Other than those, I haven't witnessed any other malfunctions as other customers have said.

This is an excellent car for a college student to have!

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0

Summary:

Great car, looks and runs super

Faults:

E-brake cable stretched (so it don't work).

Lost one of the front bumper grilles (seem to come out too easy).

Single-disk CD player quit working (I got a disk changer though).

General Comments:

Cabin is really nice, Lots of options, and a very driver friendly car.

Gets great gas mileage.

Tight shifting and good brakes, runs like a top, never had a problem with it starting, I keep regular maintenance on my car and take care of it.

If work needs to be done, I don't take it to a VW dealer as they cost too much. I think that's why so many people complain about the car.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Summary:

This car is junk, don't by a VW

Faults:

Key switch inoperative

Front wheel bearings bad

Spedo and tach inoperative

Electric windows inoperative

Clutch worn out.

General Comments:

This car is a piece of junk. How many cars these days need new wheel bearings and key switch at 100K miles?

The VW dealers cannot identify the key switch by the serial number.

The quality of the interior is terrible.

VW is horribly unreliable, anyone who does their homework can see that.

8th Dec 2006, 09:49

Yes, yes, I had one Jetta that was so "horribly unreliable" that I only got 228,000 miles out of it!

Seriously though, I've never had a "horribly unreliable" VW.

I don't doubt that they exist, but not all of us have had bad experiences with VW.

What year was the VW that you got 228,000 miles out of? Was it one of the new Mexican-built ones?

1999 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0

A money and repair headache

Timing belt broke at 70k miles. Required a valve job as the motor is classified as an Interference Engine.

Water pump bearings & auxiliary gear shaft bearings were poorly designed.

General Comments:

Car design/style is good. Too bad the mechanical engineering doesn't/didn't measure up.Vehicle has not been as reliable as hoped. My next car will not be a VW for sure.
