1999 Volkswagen Jetta GL old body style 2.0L

Summary:

If you have the money to fix and repair almost monthly, go for it. Otherwise, buy a honda

Faults:

Reverse gear replaced at 65,000.

Muffler replaced 3 times within one year.

Throttle body cleaned at 105,00.

Water pump replaced 98,000.

Power steering pump replaced 99,000.

General Comments:

I hate this car so much, I love it. Love-hate relationship. As many problems as I have had with this car, I will continue to purchase the vehicles. However, this is probably, mostly based on aesthetic reasons. When you see a jetta, you look...it's kind of like a jeep thing. I've had this car for a little over 2 years...it's probably been in the shop 6 months within the two years. I'm sure all you VW owners know.

I'm sorry to hear you have had so many problems with your VW! We got a Jetta GL last October and we love it. We replaced the cat with a magnaflow and a muffler. Otherwise it has been great! :)

All that sounds like normal wear and tear for a near 100,000 mile car. Except for the muffler, you must live in a high salt area.

Yeah I'm kinda confused here, except for the muffler, you'd be hard pressed to find a vehicle that didn't need that kind of maintenance at 100k miles. Nothing unusual about that.

I agree with you. I have a 98 Jetta! It had 90000 approx miles on it when I bought it. I've had it for 3 years and it's one problem after another.

Now it's my muffler, or well I think it's my muffler. It makes this loud, horrible, rattling noise when I turn on the car and it gets louder as I drive! Pretty embarrassing!

But I still love it.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta TDI TDI

Summary:

Drive it to the lot, paint it yellow, light it on fire, and just walk away!

General Comments:

This car should be parked on the lot painted yellow and lite on fire! By far the biggest money pit ever seen. Drivers wanted they say? More like Mechanics needed!!! Is there anything that is good about this car? Survey says,"No" especially now that Diesel prices have gone up... You think that you have it bad with your vehicle? I have warning lights on my dash board that are for "special features" my car doesn't even have. How can I even fix it if I don't own it??? It has come down to spending over $5000 since it has been off warrenty 4 years ago..that is about $1500 YEARLY on repair "W.T.F over"

1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Summary:

Great Car, no problems at all

Faults:

Truthfully, nothing has went wrong since I purchased it brand new. Aside from brakes and oil changes nothing major.

General Comments:

My car has the roll up windows. Thank heavens. Aside from the molding inside the driver door, nothing bad has happened. this car always starts and runs perfect. It has good power and I am happy with it. just like some bags of apples there are a few bad ones, in my case I got a good one. I love it. I even upgraded the rims and tail lights. My Jetta is dependable and swift.

Hey I wanted to ask, was your car assembled in Mexico? Please email me at xxx_bluelime_xxx@yahoo.com if you can to tell me, because many are assembled there and that's the cause cuz the cheap rate the people get paid there, they don't work with quality. In other cases, they are assembled in Germany or in the US. So please email me because I am looking forward to buying a VW JETTA 1999 GL, and it was assembled in Mexico, and all those comments are scaring me.

Jobs in the Mexican car industry pay very very well relative to other occupations, so auto manufacturers are very picky about whom they employ. And overall quality, since a lot of the work is done by robots, is up to the engineers and operations manager, not specifically the individual employees.

That said, I would never buy a car manfactured in Mexico or the US. About the only reliable car coming out of Mexico is the PT Cruiser.
