1999 Volkswagen Jetta gls 2.0

Faults:

I am having the same "sunroof rain" problems. When it rains recently, I have a back passenger and front passenger floorboards that are 3 inches deep with water. So I would say it is beyond soaked. Would LOVE to be involved in a manufacture recall. I also think they should recall the front bumper on this year model which is too low for standard parking bumps and rips off. What a painful $200 or more defect!

General Comments:

In general, besides the fact that in the past year every plastic thing on the interior and exterior of the garage kept car has broken, mechanically i have been very happy. when will VW have a hybrid?

1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Summary:

5-speed gets great gas mileage!

Faults:

The compressor in the air conditioner locked up on my just this year, and the dealership wanted to charge me $1300 to fix it. I took it to a private mechanic, and he fixed it for me for $900.

General Comments:

I love this car! I bought it at 100,000 miles, and it has gone cross-country with me without any problems. I drive it city and highway, and it performs beautifully on both. I have a 5-speed manual transmission, and with that I average 33 miles to the gallon city and almost 60 miles to the gallon highway. This is one make and model I'd buying again!

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0

Summary:

It is going to die

Faults:

I am sixteen and I bought a 1999.5 new Jetta in 2005. I have had nothing but problems with it.

My keyless entry quit

The radio quit.

And lots of other things.

Cruise control kicks on when I turn the key on before I turn it to ignition, and it floors it after many attempts to start it. It quit, and now I do not know what to do.

General Comments:

Peace of crap.

I hate it.

Bad car. DO NOT BUY ONE.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0L 2.0

Summary:

Fine example of German engineering expertise!

Faults:

I knew getting into a high mileage car would have some effects.

The ABS light went on and had to have a speed sensor replaced.

The electrical on the windows is getting weird. Sometimes they work fine other times they don't, but the motors are still going strong.

Ball joints went at 110,000 miles (normal for a car).

A/C compressor went at 118,000 miles.

General Comments:

It is a great car and I haven't had anything major go wrong with it!

The cosmetics are great! Paint has a few chips, but no rust and it still shines. Interior is in incredible shape and not worn at all.

The car is a beast! It holds up to anything! It has spent all its years in harsh winter conditions and has very little in the way of wear to show for it!

The engine runs strong still, no problems there!

Clutch is the original and still tight.

Amazing handling and performance as to be expected with German engineering!

1999 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0

Summary:

Good car

Faults:

Same issues as most with the window motors, mine were going up and down, but then back down by self - replaced with non-standard motors and have been good for 3 years now.

Throttle body was completely cracked replaced by non VW shop and all is good.

Original radio was junk - would say no CD/tape in use when CD/tape was in use. replaced with Sony and all is good.

Biggest issue is the door trim that is stuck on with cheap tape.

General Comments:

I love my car and haven't really had "major" issues out of it. still gets great MPG even with 89000 miles on it.

Where did you get the non OEM window motors from?

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0L

Summary:

Lively and handles very well

Faults:

Interior plastics have cracked and broken (glove compartment hinge, sun visor door, cup holders, etc).

Air bag warning light came on - local service shop found a loose wiring harness in the drivers seat.

No other major problems... yet.

General Comments:

My 1999 Jetta has been fairly reliable. However, my comments here is an attempt to provide some advice to owners of VW's, in general, with the emission system. They will do a lot better on mid grade or premium grade gasoline in terms of lifespan of the oxygen sensors and mass air flow sensors.

These vehicles require more maintenance than the Japanese cars overall. So if you're thinking of owning one, make sure you can work on it yourself, or that you don't mind spending more $ on it than you would an American or Japanese car.

Thanks.
