Faults:

Here's what I remember:

02 Sensor

Catalytic converter

Timing belt sensor

Sunroof broke

Fuel sensor

Temp gauge broke.

General Comments:

Fun to drive, expensive to repair. And it needs repairs quite often.

Faults:

First is the $100.00+ oil changes, then the window regulators letting go in Dec during winter.

Then in Oct. 2005, paid $300.00 for an oil change and some special filter change.

November 2005, $1200.00 to get the timing belt changed as required every 96 000kms?

January ($2500-$3000.00) This time the transmission lasted about 40 000kms. Then I cannot go back to the dealership because it is CLOSED! The guys who is rebuilding it now says that the last person who fixed it, put in old parts just to make it run and charged me full price!

Not impressed overall with car and VW service in this area. However VW Canada will be getting an email upon me receiving my bill this time. Get ready!

Faults:

I've had most of the common problems happen to me.

The plastic which is used to secure the movable interior components always seems to break off. It just takes time. Cup holder, glove box, console, mirror controls, etc.

The front driver side window fell into the car door. Seven months later, the passenger side window fell into the other door.

It's possible to unlock the doors manually, with the key, and still have the alarm on. Fun way to start the day. Another fun way is to wake up and not be able to open the trunk.

The bemoaned "shield" on the bottom front of the car should just be called a "bumper hook." Ramps, driveways, etc will catch your shield, dragging down the bumper. This slowly loosens and eventually breaks the tiny screws holding the bumper up... via plastic. Not worth keeping on.

The electrical system has been continuously problematic as well.

General Comments:

Over 4 years I've had many problems with my 2000 Jetta GLS.

However, when running well, the car was fuel-efficient. It ran quietly and handled well enough. It gets cramped in there quickly though.

Overall I do not recommend the 2000 Jetta GLS.

Faults:

Power window went out at about 50,000 miles. Replaced by dealer at no charge because of history of failure. They also replaced the passenger side power mechanism at no charge to prevent any future problem.

Replaced some type of sensor at no charge at about 40,000 miles, (it kept making the "check engine" light come on.)

The coolant temp. gauge only works intermittently, but I have not bothered to fix it.

On the positive side, I just had the front brakes checked yesterday, and they STILL don't show much sign of wear at 67,000 miles! I am impressed. I did replace the rear brakes at about 57,000 miles.

General Comments:

I have loved this car since the first time I drove it. It has a lot of power for the small displacement - very "torquey" and fun to drive - yet it gets right around 30 mpg. It does require premium gas however.

We "tailgate" a lot, and the trunk holds an amazing amount of stuff. People cannot believe all the stuff we get in there!

I have heard of others having problems with the Jetta, but I think it is mostly with the 2.0 non turbo.

Let's put it this way: my other car is a Porsche, but I still enjoy driving the Jetta. Passing (say going from 50 to 70 mph) does not even require downshifting. The 1.8 turbo really has some torque!

This car is still as tight as a drum. No squeaks or rattles.

Faults:

My 2000 Jetta caught fire; the car was parked with the window up and the door locked. Definitely something electrical because the dash melted. After the door was opened the whole thing ignited. We were parked in the middle of nowhere in Vermont - no cell service, nearest house 1/4-1/2mile away. I do know the car had a recall on the brake light switch. My car kept blowing fuses, but no dash lights would come on. I did put new fuses in it, but at different times other fuses would blow.
