Faults:

The driver window mechanism has broken at least three times.

The passenger window mechanism has broken at least three times.

Retention springs have fallen off of both the driver and passenger seats.

Both glove box hinges cracked in two.

The console latch broke.

The hub caps and the front bumper vents routinely come off.

The dome light switch fell out.

The finish on all of the plastic in the car is peeling off.

The hose on the turbo fell off.

The rear brake calipers needed machining after 45, 000 miles.

General Comments:

The torque and handling are excellent.

The engine has been reliable.

What is even more reliable is the tendency for any plastic component in the car to break, and then break again.

General Comments:

I am very pleased with this car. This is our first foreign car. It runs and handles very well. It feels tight and solid compared to domestic and other foreign models. You get the feeling that you are in a superior vehicle. The doors and trunk are tight. We bought a 1999 for our Daughter and was so impressed that We bought another one to commute in. I commute 150 miles every day and the gas mileage has been excellent. The only problems I see with the car is that the cup holder is in the wrong place. The antenna does not receive very well and I don't like the doors auto locking and unlocking. I would rather have a single key with a FOB. In the mornings I like to start the car and go back in the house until it warms up. The car won't let you lock it from the outside when it is running. We don't like the way the car slows down when you let off the gas. Probably no more American cars. The verdict is still out though.

Faults:

The check engine light keeps coming on and I've received explanations such as the catalytic converter is bad, the air intake valve is bad, and "I don't know why."

The center console latch broke off about a year after I purchased it.

The cup holders fell apart at about the same time. The cup holders are very cheaply built and poorly engineered. They cost a fortune to replace just for a little plastic part.

The two front windows both fell into the doors, but later a recall fixed them both and refunded me my money when I had the first one fixed.

Back speaker in the stereo blew a long time ago (just one).

Uses oil more than I'd imagine, but mechanics have told me it's normal.

Maintenance is way to high and parts are too expensive. $1,400 to put in a new catalytic converter? Come on!!!

General Comments:

The car's general performance is great. Maintenance is way to expensive and replacement parts are too expensive. Small parts like cup holders and center console latches are poorly engineered and break easily. The check engine light seems to be a problem with EVERY Jetta VR6 owner I've spoken to and the reason is always different.

Faults:

My check engine light has been replaced 4 times in 4 years. Dealer states good for 3 years, HA HA jokes on me...

My car burns so much oil I have to feed it a quart at every 1,500 miles or the oil light dings.

The glove compartment box has broken 2 times.

The sky roof won't close if the temperature is above 90 degrees.

General Comments:

The only good point is the car stereo.
