Sounds like the oxygen sensor.

Mine went; I installed a new one (10 minutes) and the car is now as good as new.

I had a similar problem; turned out it was the primary (there is also a secondary) fuel pump which needed replacing (this was at 93,500 miles). The cost was $600. Hope your problem is less expensive. Good luck.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0L

Summary:

A well engineered, reliable vehicle

Faults:

My left brake light will not work. I have replaced the bulb, inspected the light assembly, and the wiring. I was given a recall on it, and I took it in. when I got the car back it still didn't work.

My left front running light, also the blinker, will work as a blinker, but not as a running light.

My driver door sensor goes off constantly anytime I hit a bump, forcing me to open and close it while driving.

When I start the car in cold weather, a horrible groaning sound comes from the engine for about a second. Cannot figure out what it is.

General Comments:

I do love this car. The craftsmanship and detail that Volkswagen put into it is superb, and has more features than any other car I've ever owned. the little 2.0 4 banger is pretty quick for being stock, and has run with only minor problems for 7 years now.

I do wish the suspension came a lot stiffer, when changing lanes or turning at high speeds the car acts independent from the wheels, and I fight to keep control of it sometimes.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta VR6

Summary:

Cheaply made

Faults:

OMG, where to start?

After I test drove the car, the check engine light came on and the car was shaking. I told the dealership they would have to fix that first. I took the car in the next day, and the check engine light was off, so they couldn't do anything for me. This went on for weeks; finally they replaced the main brain in car, and now it doesn't work at all, no check engine light.

I too have the crayon smell in my car, and it's annoying. When I asked dealership about it, they told me that the previous owner must have had children, and got crayons stuck in vent.

My front headlight lens is hazed over from the inside.

The front bumper is just hanging now, because it keeps popping off, and I can't get it to pop back in place, and really don't think I should have to pay for a whole new assembly.

My windows go up and down. Even if I'm pushing up, they go down, and vice versa.

I too have this thumping noise under my seat, but when I took it to my mechanics and they put it up on the rack, they found nothing, nor did I, since I was looking too.

I also have this winding noise that comes when I start the car sometimes, and my RPMs are way up too. The car shakes really bad, then after a while, I need to shut off the engine and restart it, and it is fine. Or during the summer, if it's hot, I go to start my car and it won't start. My mechanic said the noise I'm hearing from the engine might be my oxygen sensor not working. Well recently Volkswagen has sent out a recall notice. I called to get my car in, and was informed from the dealership that the recall part is defective, and they can't fix them now until new part is made available. I told my mechanic, and he stated that the catalyst is affected by the sensor, and that is my main source of problem with the engine at this time, but I don't feel I need to pay for that, since it was a defect from Volkswagen...

General Comments:

This is my second Jetta in 10 years. My first was a 1997 GT, which I purchased brand new with 150 miles on it. Within a year and a half, it had 28 work orders on it!!! I gave the car away, I made nothing off of it, and the dealership where I bought the car wouldn't take it back either. I had to drive 529 miles away to turn it in.

I thought I would try one more, but after this time I will NEVER own a Jetta again. Volkswagen knows about all of these issues, and has known for years, and still won't do anything about it. I'm sure mine was a lease return because of issues on the car.

My next car is going to be a Crossfire... :)
