Faults:

When I bought the car, the passenger window was broken off in door. (Plastic piece broke) Cost $180.

Check engine light goes on and off, though I do not think anything is wrong with it, just a sensor that is broken.

Lint sticks to the seats really bad and is hard to get off.

Area on my cluster is burnt out, have not gotten it fixed yet.

Other than that I have had no problems, and even the ones I listed are not a huge deal or cost.

General Comments:

This car has a lot of power.

Great look! I also bought after market headlights and tail lights, which look amazing.

Very sturdy ride.

Good stock stereo, speakers sound very good.

Shifts very smoothly, haven't had to replace clutch yet (I am not sure of when previous owner had it changed)

Very reliable, starts in the cold fine. 0 major problems with it so far! Will be buying another VW in the future!

Faults:

Brakes at approximately 25k miles.

O2 sensor 3 times within 5 years from the date of purchase.

Catalytic converter 2 times.

Lugs that hold the debris deflector under the engine broke off, causing vibration noise.

A recall item every time I took my car to the dealer for the first 3 years.

Door arm rest peeling off, had to replace them 3 times already. Middle arm rest broken.

Wiper motor stopped working.

General Comments:

I love driving my Jetta, and I'm embarrassed to tell people about all the mechanical problems that I have experienced with my car, since I drove it out of the dealer.

I also own a Honda CRV, which is a year older.

In summary, the Honda only requires regular oil change and tires change. My Jetta has spent so much time in the garage, that I have decided to buy a Chilton's manual and attempt to do the repairs myself. Or take it to anybody else but the dealer; at the prices they charge, I can save enough money for a down payment on a brand new car! On top of that, the attitude of the people at the VW dealers can be cocky at times!

Faults:

Replaced transmission 50,000.

Peeling all over the interior.

Check engine light keeps coming on.

Window fell down in door.

Replaced mass air flow sensor, temperature sensor, oxygen sensor.

Replaced oil pan.

Burns oil.

Now my catalytic converter is bad; 800.00 because the warranty was only for 100,000.

Middle console broke off.

Check engine light stays on.

Air conditioner broke.

General Comments:

They do not make them like they did in the 80's.

Faults:

Parking brake sensor.

Brake light switch.

Electronic immobilizer.

Passenger seat belt locking mechanism.

General Comments:

I have routinely done all preventive maintenance, and have only used the best fluids and parts for my Jetta, and still have electrical problems on parts that should last longer.

So for all of you that say do better preventive maintenance, how do you keep your electronic immobilizer from going out or your parking brake sensor from going out?

By the way, the electronic immobilizer went out, and I had to replace the whole gauge cluster. What idiot thought that was a good idea. If I can maintain a transmission and an engine to last 200,000 miles, shouldn't the electrical systems last at least last half of that?

I will never own another VW again; the worst engineering and craftsmanship I have ever seen.
