One absolutely amazing car,
Mass air flow is getting shot after 9 years.
Head lights got cloudy.
And it needed new brake pads.
Amazing car, it grips the ground, and is very, VERY reliable. Easy to control.

The passenger window belt broke.
Center arm rest is broken.
Really easy to drive.
I feel very comfortable inside this car.
Factory battery was horrible, but works like a beauty with a new one.
Probably the best stock stereo systems I have ever heard in a lower-end car.

Piece of junk
Turbo at 42,000 km.
Mass airflow sensor at 48,000 km.
ABS sensor at 58,000 km.
Wheel bearings at 31,000 km.
Ashtray at 29,000 km.
Master cylinder at 63,000 km.
The good: the car handles well.
It is reasonably fast for a turbo diesel.
The blue lighting is cool.
The bad: everything else.
Really, the car is a piece of junk. The list of what went wrong is just what was confirmed. However, the number of trips I had to the dealer was outrageous.
I got a choice of a company car and for some stupid reason, I picked this Jetta (I had never had a Volkswagen before, an itch I no longer feel the need to scratch). The other choice was either a Chrysler Intrepid or a Honda Accord. What the hell was I thinking, especially coming off a Honda Accord that had given me zero problems beyond regular maintenance. Zero.
The turbo was a good example. It worked on and off when it wanted to. When it finally died, it was at 42,000 km. I was initially told by Volkswagen that it was out of warranty (40,000 kms). I was told their vehicles are reliable. So, I asked them why their warranty was so low compared to others if they believed their cars were reliable. I was told that it was because their cars were so reliable that they had that lower warranty (no word of a lie, that's what the rep tried to tell me). I told them if they wanted a lawsuit, they could deny the coverage. That seemed to convince them to cover the turbo under warranty.
The rest I covered until I was able to buy the car out which I did (as it was less than the current market value) and then sold it ASAP.
I will never get a Volkswagen again.

My 2000 VR6 just crapped out at 133k. I put in about 4k in repairs throughout the lifetime. I'm satisfied with 133k, because I know these cars blow. I will never buy another VW unless I can afford it. Really, if you can't afford the maintenance on VWs, don't buy them. I loved my VR6 really, but man, the repairs sucked.
My driver;s window stayed broken 3 of the 5 years I had the darn thing, because it was $300 to fix. But yes VW are sic, and I would buy one if I made over 50k a year, but since I'm a college student, I'll stick with my 98 4runner with 200k, that I can drive over the grapevine in California ANY DAY.
The car is fun to drive, gets good mileage -23 driving to work and 29 max hwy and is fairly reliable
Under the Mfg warranty or the extended warranty I had the following replaced -
The transmission had 1st gear replaced along with synchronizers at 97,000 miles.
Around 60,000 miles had the ignition coil replaced along with the shifter rod in the intake manifold.
At 80,000 miles I replaced the drive pulley bearing, which locked up.
Not covered under any warranties, which I replaced, was the auxiliary water pump, which was fairly cheap at 120,000 miles.
I replaced the front drive axle at 110,000 miles, along with new battery cables.
I certainly have enjoyed the car, which came loaded.
It's been modified with many engine aftermarket performance parts such as cold air intake; lightened drive flywheel; lightened drive pulleys; performance computer software; complete performance exhaust system; upgraded suspension including front and rear sway bars; aftermarket bumpers.
It obviously handles very well, is quick and responsive. The engine has never burned any oil, nor has it caused any problems.
The fit and finish of the materials in the engine cabin are a big step up over most Asian cars. It also rates as one of the safest cars - which my son can attest to, as he did $4,000 damage and blew out one side airbag and one front airbag.
