2001 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8 turbo

Summary:

I would own another Volkswagen .

Faults:

At 49,000 miles, the oil pressure failed.

At 55,000 miles, the air intake valve failed.

General Comments:

After owning a Dodge Neon that had a new problem every week, this car was a nice change.

Originally purchased in New York, the car has been driven from Florida to Washington, DC, then on to Michigan and back to New York!

I consider it highly reliable, and cannot fault it's two problems around 50,000 miles.

My best advice is keep the oil changed and do the ten thousand mile check ups with the dealer.

I still love this car and find the problems others have had to be surprising, as my car has been driven very hard the past three years and held up delightfully.

2001 Volkswagen Passat Wagon 1.8L turbo

Summary:

Biggest purchasing mistake I have ever made

Faults:

Engine failure at 49,000 miles due to poor design of 1.8L Turbo. Volkswagen is not covering under Limited Power Train Warranty because our maintenance records do not meet "Volkswagen standards" (not described anywhere in owner's documentation).

General Comments:

Volkswagen has been horrible to deal with. They are clearly out to avoid warranty performance. Stories of this exact same failure and obstinate attitude of manufacturer are easy to come by. Volkswagen amazingly continues to try to pin the blame on its costumers.

2001 Volkswagen Passat

Summary:

An absolute nightmare that makes me wonder if there's a lawsuit in here somewhere

Faults:

Door and hood seals deteriorated and needed replacement at 27,000 miles.

Full brake system had to be replaced at 29,000 miles.

Drainage hose from sun roof had a hole and flooded carpet with every rain - this took four visits to the dealer to repair and required replacement of the carpet which had rotted and smelled exceedingly foul.

Alternator needed to be replaced at 30,000 miles.

Trim periodically falls off on the highway - 3 pieces of door trim lost between 30-40,000 miles.

Vacuum hoses required replacement at 41,000 miles.

Coil packs required replacement at 41,000 miles.

General Comments:

I purchased my 2001 Volkswagen Passat after much research into buying a used vehicle. Sadly, I will never purchase another Volkswagen. I purchased the car with 25,000 miles, and have experienced the following problems in the short 1.5 years that I have owned it. Granted, the car is beautiful, receives many compliments, is extraordinarily comfortable, and drives beautifully when it drives at all.

Since much of the problems occurred within a few thousand miles of your purchase. It seems you might have been taken in by the looks of the vehicle and not looked beneath the surface, and had the vehicle checked out. If the seals were gone at 27k miles and the brakes shot at 29k, these issues would have been spotted at 25k miles.

You state you wonder if there is a lawsuit in there somewhere? Please!

If you ever buy another used car, I suggest taking the time and expense to have it inspected thoroughly. It will save you money and heartache down the road.

2001 Volkswagen Passat GLX 2.3 V6

Summary:

OK car

Faults:

Well I just bought the car and the Monsoon audio system is not working properly. It is suppose to be Premium Sound System in which it definately sounds like a regular factory car. The vehicle has 4 tweeters does not have any sound.

General Comments:

This car has a lot of space, the seats are very comfortable, and the looks of the car are great.

I am not sure if I would like to purchase another volkswagon vehicle cause the every dealership that I go to gives a crappy service.

2001 Volkswagen Passat Wagon 1.8t

Summary:

A real bank breaker!

Faults:

Right headlight out after 25K miles

Right headlight went out again around 35K miles.

Interior has started peeling severely. Especially around a/c controls and on interior door handles.

Heater coil under passenger seat became stuck then came unattached when repositioning seat.

Around 42K miles, oil pump went out. Then as a result the turbo went out. (Actually covered under warranty!)

Right headlight went out again around 45K miles. In for repair now.

Now the fuel intake sensor is telling my gauge that I have gas, when, in fact the car is on empty. This resulted in my running out of gas, thus destroying my spark plugs which is costing around $500. In for repair now.

General Comments:

I will never buy another Volkswagen again... no matter how cute they are. My second LEMON!
