1989 Volvo 740 GL 2.1 4 cylinder

Summary:

Volvo is the best - mid class BMW

Faults:

Air heater leaks water.

Water shutoff switch fell apart.

Clear coat peels off of the hood.

Fuel indicator works intermittently, as well as mileage count, so it is not 160K, but close to 200K I suppose.

General Comments:

Awesome car for $1500.

I drove it all across America: Texas to California and back, Texas to Seattle and Seattle to Florida. No problems whatsoever.

Engine overheated in California mountain pass, but still worked well with air heater on.

Steering wheel a bit stiff and tends to turn right.

Too little engine, but very durable.

1989 Volvo 740 GLE 16v

Summary:

I love this car and wish they still made them

Faults:

In 1994 the computer was replaced. Paid $1000.00 including diagnostics.

1998 Air conditioning system totally replaced after finding multiple leaks.

1999 Positive Battery cable melted (fire hazard) replaced without incident.

Headliner hanging in 2003. Replaced with a "do it yourself kit" It looks like the original from the factory & I saved $300.00.

All other "things gone wrong" are typical of a car needing routine maintenance, such as Brakes & Tires.

General Comments:

Solid, dependable & comfortable car with good visibility.

Survived without a scratch in a 5 car pile-up. All other cars were heavily damaged.

Leather seats and exterior finish are still looking good.

Four studded snow tires make this car handle beautifully in the snow.

Does not leak or burn oil, has had no major engine work, and has no rust.

This is the nicest "old car" I have owned.

Hello!

I'm a fifteen year old boy from Goteborg, Sweden.

I totally agree with you. I think the Volvo 700-series is the best car series ever made. The best ones are the 780 and the 740 Turbo -90. I have been grown up with Volvo cars and I can't find any car that I love more than the 740.

1989 Volvo 740 GL

Summary:

Lovable, despite warts.

Faults:

Excessive vibration.. Had motor mounts replaced.

Rear Headliner sagging... Used 8 small powerful magnets to hold liner up to roof. Works great!... at least until liner starts to tear. My previous 740 had same problem... liner sags, rots and tears..

General Comments:

Not quick off the starting line!!

Comfortable highway ride.

Rolls with luxury feel. Feels massive and safe.

Interior plastic parts snap, crackle and pop...

Exterior paint and trim is excellent. Looks great with a polish!

1989 Volvo 740 745 turbo

Faults:

Turbocharger at approximately 270,000 miles.

Radiator at 180,000 miles.

Transmission bearings failed at 150,000 miles.

Headliner replaced at 290,000 miles.

General Comments:

The car sat unused for 11 months after our son wrecked it. We decided to have it repaired. Using jumper cables to boost the dead battery, the engine turned over one time, then started and has run well for the past 20,000 miles.

The red leather upholstery has held up remarkably well.

This has been a great car.

I will try to find another 1989 through 1992 740 turbo when this one has to be replaced.

Other than the louder exhaust note, we recommend the IPD stainless steel exhaust system when the original requires replacement.

1989 Volvo 740 Intercooler turbo

Summary:

Most Reliable Car I Have Ever Owned

Faults:

Nothing major so far. Only had the transmission flushed, tune-up, and oil change. Will need to replace or repair the headliner in the back because it is starting to sag a little bit. A friend of mines said I can do that my self with a razor blade and glue spray. I still think I am going to have it done professionally. Will also need to have the AC checked as the air is not blowing cold. I bought this car in the Chicago winter, so air conditioning was the least concern.

General Comments:

I love this car, and probably will drive it until it dies. A member of my church has one, and he was amazed that I only have 123,000 miles. He said he has 297,000 miles on his and it still gets him around with no problem. I am always getting stop by people to ask what year it is? I just love the look on their face when I tell them a 1989. The maroon leather interior is in perfect condition. The sunroof, power windows, and locks still work perfectly. Trunk space is enormous. I probably will need to upgrade the radio to a CD player, but the cassette player is still operable.

My 1989 740 Turbo Volvo shows no signs of weakening as it enters its seventeenth year of service. All 740/60s gave the same problems: brakes, water pumps and headliners (especially headliners!). But you can really put on the miles. I am the third owner of this car, and recently watched the odometer turn over to 250,000.
