1992 Volvo 740 Wagon 2.3 Liter turbo
Summary:
Solid car, solid performance
Faults:
Nothing major has needed to be fixed. The exhaust rusted out, but cost less than $150 and 2 hours to replace with simple tools.
The electrical system has some quirks - the speedometer sometimes jumps around due to a short, and sometimes the power windows don't work.
The fuel filter needed to be replaced as it was too clogged to allow proper fuel flow.
The car needs a new air mass meter, about $200 on the web.
The transmission pan gasket has a slight leak.
General Comments:
This car has the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in for 13 hours at a time.
It has great power and cruises well on the highway, and the turbocharger comes in handy when driving in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
It has plenty of cargo room - with the seats down I can easily fit my bike inside. I could sleep back there if I had to.
The fuel economy is fair; I average around 20-23 miles per gallon, but the car requires 91 octane.
As with any ten year old car, there are many small maintenance items that can get expensive, such as spark plugs, vacuum lines, fuel filter, air filter, oxygen sensor, etc. But none of the major mechanical systems show ANY signs that the car is near the end of its life.
The engine layout is simple enough so that most tasks are not too difficult with a competent mechanic friend's help.
All in all, I love this car, I feel like it will run for a long time as long as I take care of it, change the oil every 3000 miles, and make sure the turbo gets a chance to spin down after driving.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I second your opinion... A great car. I looked for my 740 Turbo wagon for a few years. I wanted one with ONE owner and kept well. Bought it in 2008 for 3000 US, and put on one tire to get through Maryland inspection. I work out of the car as a craftsman/contractor/designer. I keep the rear seat down, and have a cloth tonneau cover covering slide out bins for tools and stuff. The car spent time in Croatia, where it was repaired after a fender bender. The car had 92,000 when I got it, and I put on about 30,000 a year. It's got power and looks good. I love the no nonsense knobs and controls. It handles and brakes well.
