1995 Volvo 940

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Brakes can go rather quick in this car.

As far as major problems with the car, there has been none.

The only "major" thing to go wrong with the car is the water pump started to leak at 135,000 miles.

The radio works for tapes, but the radio works when it wants to. Sometimes I get stations--most of the time I don't.

It can be difficult to get it up at higher speeds, but once you do, it is a very smooooooth ride.

The door trim is very loose, and is coming apart from the windows.

General Comments:

I really have enjoyed this car ever since I bought it.

I found a great mechanic that works primarily on Volvo. He is reasonably priced and is very honest. I would never take it to the dealer.

I hope to have this car for another 10 years.

For highway, it only gets 23 miles and city around 18-19. But with an almost 20 gallon fuel tank, it is nice not having to get gas too often.

1995 Volvo 940 I-4

Summary:

The best bang for the buck I have ever purchased!

Faults:

The driver seat is pretty worn out (expected for this mileage). Electrical issues with window controls. Replaced alternator belt at 290000. The power is not impressive around town.

General Comments:

Incredible car for the money. I picked this car up at an auction for $800 and I put $100 in it. That included: spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor and an air filter. It boggles my mind that it runs so well for this mileage! It gets 20 in the city and around 26 on trips. I am so impressed that I am buying a 960 with 177000 miles this week.

Wait! Stop! Well, it's probably too late to warn you that the 960 is a completley different beast. It's basically a 940, EXCEPT for the fact that it has a failure-prone V6 and an electronically controlled automatic trans. that doesn't last long. You should have stuck with the 940. They are fantastic cars.

The 960 has an straight 6 cylinder engine, NOT a V6, so the previous comment is untrue and therefore displays a lack of knowledge on the part of whoever posted it. And there are 2 6 cylinder engines - 2.5 litre and a 3.0 litre.

The guy above was just trying to help. Who cares what arrangement the cylinders are in? Look at the number of neutral and sad faces on the the 960 reviews page compared with 940.

Good point. I have a '94 940 at the suggestion of the mechanics that have serviced our family Volvos for many years.

These mechanics warned me off the 960's. The 960's are highly regarded, however they are more prone to problems than the 940.
