1972 Volvo P1800ES 1.8

Summary:

This is one of the sexiest designs ever

Faults:

The ignition relay had rusted out and made poor contact.

The transmission fluid leaks. Have not determined if this is a line or a gasket.

General Comments:

Better be a people person. This car seems to draw the attention of a lot of different folks. Not too many know what it is. But let them drive around and they will have a smile from ear to ear!

Wonderful car. I shopping for one now. The prices have come down some. There are decent ones to be found that make decent daily drivers.

1973 Volvo P1800ES 144E

Summary:

Great body styling for 1972/73 car years

Faults:

Odometer is broken, angle gear.

Transmission/motor mounts are broken.

Wires are not working, project car.

Goes real fast, once running.

Part are hard to find and expensive too.

Time to put in the midnight toil with the oil and get it back on the road again. What a long strange trip this has been living on the outside of the USA.

General Comments:

I enjoy the handling going over 120 mph down the Parks highway route 3 in Alaska.

Very fun to show off, since only 8,043 were ever made.

Local car club (Alaskan Auto Musher's) asks what kind of car is it. A Pinto?

I own four now, only one runs so far.

I'm planning to have a running stable.

It's a really beautiful car. The first time I saw one, I chased it for about a mile and managed to find out what it was from the owner. I have been trying to buy one for about 3 years, but I haven't found one in working order. I'm currently based in the UK, but moving to Canada in the near future. Planning to visit Sweden and see if I can buy a LHD model to export.

I liked the style for this car. I now own a C30, which pays modern tribute to this car's hatch style. They keep a couple of these 1800ES's down at the Volvo dealership where I live, not for sale. I would have loved owning one in its day.

1800ES is my favorite car I ever owned. I drove my 1973 ES since 74 thru 82, has about 57K miles before resting in my garage since. While I do enjoy driving my SL55 daily, I dream of restoring my first love during retirement. Hopefully soon.
