1999 Volvo S80 T6 2.8L twin turbo

Summary:

It is what you watch out for and don't step in, when in a pasture!!

Faults:

Sunroof deflector flopping when roof open, took to dealer. DID NOT fix the problem, but DID break the glass sunroof, and wanted ME to pay for it.

At around 86000, the steering rack went out. Dealer "fixed" it, and my wife drove it 10 miles. Got out to do some shopping, and saw power steering fluid all over the parking lot. The steering rack has leaked ever since, but in order to fix this, the whole rack has to be dropped. So I just let it leak, and go out every night and fill it up.

Had timing belt replaced as scheduled. 15000 miles later, the belt broke and bent a bunch of valves.

I can't remember all the little pieces of trim that have broken and fallen off.

General Comments:

My son has a 1998 S70 with 298000 on it, and this 1999 S80 will never make 200k. It's a shame that Volvo let junk like this onto the showroom floor. I've heard that Ford told them to put the S80 T6 out before Volvo thought it was ready. If true, then Ford is to blame for this abomination!

The previous car was a Nissan Maxima, that I got when we got the Volvo for the wife. The Max needs tires and brakes, but that is all, and is to be expected since it has 268K on the odometer. It is comforting to have the 1989 Max to drive when the mighty Volvo goes in the shop.

FOOL ME ONCE, SHAME ON YOU. FOOL ME TWICE, SHAME ON ME!!! NEVER AGAIN. Not as long as Nissan, Toyota and Honda are in business!

1999 Volvo S80 2.9

Summary:

I wish I had bought something else

Faults:

ABS module failed at 100,000 km; fix was $1000+.

Transmission issues at 120,000 km; fixed by change of filter for $100.

Passenger pillar cover fell off at 130,000 km. Fixed by self.

Power door locks failed at 150,000 km; not fixed.

Alternator died and left me on the highway in middle of nowhere; 152,000 km, $1500.

Went into limp mode at 155,000 km, $1000.

Marker lights on sides have fallen out and are hanging by wires (silicone to hold back in). The plastic was brittle

Clunking in front end over bumps; 160,000 km.

Doors and trunk would not lock correctly; 165,000 km.

Sun roof came loose from the back bar; 170,000 km, fixed with neoprene for $10.

Screw covers on both driver and passenger doors fell off... not fixed.

Headlights went out on dark highway; 225,000 km, happened tonight...

Ongoing and intermittent...

Warning light comes on and will not go away.

Pull over immediately light comes on randomly and goes away.

Brake failure light comes on and off.

General Comments:

Beautiful looks.

Reasonably powerful.

Excellent gas mileage... usually around 6.L/100 km on the highway.

Comfortable seats.

Heated seats are very nice in Canadian winters.

1999 Volvo S80 T6 2.8 turbo

Summary:

Can you say lemon, but drives great when running

Faults:

OMG! I don't think I can remember everything that has gone wrong, but I will try... :)

1. Both rear windows no longer roll down as little plastic knob at top of wire pulley system broke off.

2. The transmission blew within 6 months of getting the car.

3. Three ignition coils have been replaced.

4. Seat rocks slightly when sitting in it, because a bushing has worn out.

5. You cannot open the fabric sunroof cover, as a part inside the mechanism broke off, and doesn't allow the fabric door to open more than 2-4 inches.

6. Thermostat replaced twice.

7. Oil leaks currently, and can't find the source.

8. Radiator cracked a month ago on the plastic side.

9. Windshield wiper reservoir is cracked and unusable now (waiting for money to fix).

10. I have replaced a multitude of bulbs in the rear compartment.

11. Oxygen sensors replaced more than once.
