2000 Volvo S80

Summary:

The car really is a lemon!

Faults:

Transmission failure, engine sputtering, alternator, battery 2 times in 2 years, brake rotors.

Ford has really screwed up what was a great automobile prior to the merger.

General Comments:

From Houston Texas.

Quite frankly all of the negative comments I have heard about Volvo quality and service are true. This Volvo S80 is a sorry vehicle. I will never buy; another they suck. That is why they are sold for so cheap after some unaware sucker pays 40,000 plus for them new!

Stay away from them; the transmission will not last, and all of the bad things you hear are absolutely true.

2000 Volvo S80 2.9

Summary:

Satisfactory Ride, mediocre reliability

Faults:

66K is a cursed mark I swear. All the problems on this car occured after this mark.

First problem was the CD changer. It ate up a CD and shards of it were lodged in the player. Dealer told me they would replace the whole system at a reduced price which was a nice gesture and said the CD changer was a problem with the S80s in that model year.

70K: Alternator replaced.

72K: Battery replaced.

75K: Front right tire replaced at $200!!!

80K: Front right headlight bulbs all replaced.

88K: Power window motor replaced on passenger side door.

90K: Cruise control went. Problem fixed by dealer and seems to work even though warned by family/friends that it might be a problem.

93K: Cup-holder shattered. Dealer said could not be replaced. Tacky.

General Comments:

The car is excellent, but these minor problems are annoying. General design problems also annoyed me, such as rear head rests obstructing view out of the back window, sloping hood which makes it difficult to park (at first).

Remote control entry requires you to be at least 15 feet from the car. I don't understand why there is a panic button then. Compared with my fiance's Buick LeSabre which she can open from 150 feet away.

Lucked out with an extremely cooperative dealership who doesn't treat me like an idiot.

There are good points to note about this car:

-Seats are excellent, heated seats are nice

-Nice sound system

-Good power and handling

-Good A/C

-I like the computer messages and actually have not had problems with it giving me faulty messages.

-Decent mileage.

2000 Volvo S80 2.9

Summary:

This car is quite mediocre for a sedan of its class

Faults:

Bought car at 50K miles. Rampant issues with electronics. Indicator lights on dashboard appear/disappear randomly. Very annoying when message such as check engine or check airbag come on because it might not be an actual problem.

Power locks on car are redundant (instead of simple lock/unlock, there is one button for the power lock and I am still confused how to operate them after 2 years).

Radio controls too elaborate. Steering wheel buttons for radio only marginal. Takes driver's eyes off road if need to be operated on the radio panel.

Remote control lock very poor. Distance that it can be operated has to be close, cannot work from beyond 20-30 feet.

Tires very poor. I was on the highway probably 6 months after I had gotten everything checked out correctly and the front right tire blew out. Frightening ordeal. Took car back to dealer, they fixed it and reduced labor charges, apologized profusely. Since then, tire has developed a "spinning" problem. I have gotten it replaced twice (at a whooping $125 a wheel).

General problems such as limited rear window view is a big problem for blind spots. Right hand blind spot is absurdly large. Headrests obstruct necesary vision for driver to make a quick shift into another lane. Sloping of car hood makes parking an issue (it needs time to get used to).

General Comments:

This car is fine, but maintenance is astronomical.

2000 Volvo S80 T6 2.8 Twin turbo gas

Summary:

Beautiful and powerful, but expensive to maintain

Faults:

Struts and bushing had to be replaced.

Oil trap leaking, replaced.

ABS module bad, had rebuilt.

Throttle control module surges, cleaned.

General Comments:

This car is a pleasure to drive, smooth, like riding on rails. Very comfortable in the cabin and quite.

The car has it's fair share of problems, but once they are all fixed, this car should be able to go another 127K miles.
