Summary:

The Yugo will definitely make you get noticed

Faults:

The starter needed to be replaced when it was about 6 years old.

When the car was ten years old, the clutch cable broke.

The choke would get stuck in cold weather and had to be opened up, when the car was about 8 years old.

General Comments:

I loved the car, despite all the Yugo jokes, I found it to be very exceptional.

I liked the way it handled and at crowded ball games at school, I could always find a place to park because of its convenient size.

Congratulations on enjoying your Yugo; the only owners I've ever met that had problesm were the ones that babied them because they felt they were cheap cars.. The people that abused them because they were cheap cars have had less problems and much more enjoyment out of them. If you want more performance.. look into FIAT parts, as many parts interchange. I'm always on the lookout for an old retired Yugo for my personal collection of toys.

1988 Yugo GV GVX 1.3 gas

Summary:

Good for a recycled land mine

Faults:

Suspension is perfect for the dirt, but really bad for every day street driving. I have broken every rim on the car while rally driving. A good choice for rims are steel four lug rims. You can find these at any junk yard for $50.00.

General Comments:

If you want good performance out of a small 1300cc, start by playing with the timing and air/fuel ratio. The perfect ratio is 12/1 air/fuel.

1988 Yugo GV 1.1

Summary:

This car is exceptional for gas economy and cute!

Faults:

Catalytic converter went out at 7,000 miles.

Replaced all struts at 20,000 miles.

Carburetor problems. I understand that sub-standard gas was used at the factory that left a chemical reaction during the early years of the car. Replacement of carburetor is strongly recommended. Rebuilding doesn't take care of the problem.

General Comments:

This car is great on gas!

With some add-on options, louvered back window, luggage rack, tinted windows, etc. the car is adorable. Ownership pride must be high, to circumvent the jokes.

Parts are difficult at times to get, but if you are determined, you can find what you are looking for.

How great is it on gas? A 1988 Yugo left the factory with a highway fuel economy rating of no more than 31 mpg. From a tiny 1.6 litre engine in a very tiny car, that's really not all that great. A Rolls-Royce Phantom achieves similar results with a massive V12 engine, and nearly all mid-size V6 family cars built since the mid-1990's also hit the 30mpg mark with far more comfort, space, and refinement (not to mention safety) than a Yugo.

I'm not knocking the car of course, Yugos were much more reliable than most people give them credit for, and it is an interesting little car. It's just that if fuel economy is the sole motivating factor behind owning one, there are better choices out there on the second-hand market.
