1997 Mitsubishi Lancer GL 1.5 carb

Summary:

Almost maintenance free

Faults:

At the first year, a worrying noise from the front wheel well during cruise. I mistakenly replaced both wheel bearings to find out later that the noise was coming from the tires. After the replacement it was quiet and nothing else had been replaced after 125,000kms and 10 years of ownership, except brake pads twice.

General Comments:

I had several cars before and this Mitsubishi is built like a true blooded Japanese car. The engine is only 1500cc, no computers. Sporty in looks, and performance is just moderate, but good for fuel efficient driving. Just keep the throttle within 2000rpm during acceleration.

I kept my Toyota Corolla Liftback 1980 for 25 years with no engine overhaul and still going with a new owner. Note: I keep my speed limit within 100km/hr, best speed 80k/h.

Hi. I have a 1997 Lancer GL, and I was having problems with the knocking sounds from the front wheel. You mentioned you replaced the wheels and got it fixed. May I know exactly what was the problem?

Thanks.

Mine was a loud hum caused by the tire tread, which seems not compatible with this car. After replacing the two front tires, the hum quieted down and solved the noise problem.

1997 Lancer, 20 years old and 132000km. Minor repairs only. Original owner. Great car.

1997 Mitsubishi Lancer GLXI 1.6

Summary:

Surpass your expectations

Faults:

Condenser change after making it pass through flooded streets.

Grounded handbrake warning light (dash) which was easily repaired by Mitsubishi Service.

Blower sometimes not enough, although its very hot in the Philippines. Heat also because of the leather seats.

General Comments:

Every time my family shops around for a sedan, the Lancer is always been in our list because it has been very reliable. This car is more durable than the Civic because it was able to withstand all the punishments I've put it into, like making 180 degrees turns while running 80km and pulling up the hand brake. Its these times that makes you feel that you are driving an Evo. Also, transmission didn't give any problems when doing "Fast and the Furious" starts (you can do this by revving high while on neutral then put it on Drive, but don't remove your foot from the gas pedal) that makes your car burn rubber just like in the movies. You just have to get used to this car and feel it so every maneuver you make will be made with confidence, it will never let you down. Just needs a little more juice if you are serious with racing, but for a family car, this will suffice. Just don't abuse it like making it run to rough terrain or muddy, just stick to the road.

1997 Mitsubishi Lancer GL

Summary:

The car is okay for everyday driving

Faults:

The clutch pad was worn out even though the car was not yet one year old. I had to change four clutch pads in a span of three years.

The floor mat always slides and it interferes with the pedals.

General Comments:

Generally, the car is good, but the problem with the clutch will have to be rectified.
