2006 Renault Megane Privilege 1.9 dCi turbo diesel

Summary:

Buy at your own risk

Faults:

Lack of power problems since I bought it, no one sorted it out yet (the car barely moves to 2500rpm, then takes off like a rocket - noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear).

Variable steering broke down at around 60000 kilometers - steering doesn't stiffen up with speed.

Metal clunk in the steering column when cornering over bumps at moderate / high speed; appeared at 25000 kilometers, and amplified with time.

Navigation screen sliding mechanism broke down at 65000 kilometers.

Water leaks in storage compartments under the driver's and passenger's feet; appeared at 70000 kilometers.

Airbag contact under driver's seat keeps disconnecting at the slightest contact. Problem appeared at 60000 kilometers.

General Comments:

Overlook some of the problems, and you've got an exceptional performer both in engine performance and handling.

Driving position could have been lower, but you get used to it.

Gas mileage is pretty good, I got 18.82 mpg (8L/100) urban during the winter, average temperature -5 degrees Celsius.

2003 Renault Megane 1.6 16v

Summary:

This particular car had all the faults in the book! The crappiest car I ever had

Faults:

Radio CD broke in the first 6 months. Replaced under warranty after 1 month, poor customer support (they wouldn't call to inform the part came, didn't know where the part was when I went to replace it).

Water flooding on the right side. Technicians knew about the issue, it became a common problem.

Trunk door refused to lock. Technicians had no clue about the reason or how to dissemble the door, almost broke some plastic parts. Advised me to never wash the car with pressure as the water gets in and contacts rust.

Rear tires worn prematurely & sooner than front ones. No explanation from dealer.

Sunroof broken, lubricated, broke again. Common problem for the model.

Both front windows broken (electric windows). For a very small plastic part that broke they asked about EUR400 as it was part of an assembly that controls the window and didn't sell it separately.

Engine stops when idling or running in 1st or neutral. Apparently some sensor needs cleaning/ replacement. No fault when diagnosed on computer.

The suspension makes a lot of noise, although the car was not abused (no country roads or so).

Steering also makes strange noise. Yet another common problem.

Airbag & service lights on dashboard come on and off with no particular reason.

Steering requires a lot of effort as compared to other cars I drove.

General Comments:

Quite expensive car for the pain endured. Another proof that some manufacturers nowadays make money out of spare parts.

Quite surprised to find on a forum the other days almost ALL the faults this car had listed by dozens of users. I only missed a couple: e.g. AC controls still working.

Incredible how Renault survive (do they?) while delivering such lousy cars from technical point of view. They seems to only invest in design and useless gadgets (rain sensors, light sensors etc.)

2000 Renault Megane RTA 1.6e

Summary:

A good solid, reliable car, but not so well made and certainly not sporty at all

Faults:

A few times it didn't start from the first attempt.

General Comments:

The car is very reliable.

The ride is very comfortable, but it doesn't handle at all well on curves.

The acceleration is above average and not what I would expect from a 1.6 engine (I have the 8v, 90hp version)

Fuel consumption is excellent.

Build quality is poor, the fittings are quite bad, and it doesn't seem they would last well in time.

Spacious car, good accommodation for 5 adults, huge boot, I could never fill it.

Very low running costs, I only put gas and oil in it, the car is very reliable.

2004 Renault Megane Sport Tourer 1.6 16v

Summary:

Excellent choice for a family estate

Faults:

Nothing until now, the car is almost new.

General Comments:

This car is the estate model so the inner space is large and comfortable. There are a lot of storage spaces and the interior is well-finished, although the materials may wear sooner than you expect. The seats are firm, but comfortably and can be easily adjusted to fit almost anyone.

The electrical progressive steering is excellent, also the brakes. The grip is good until 150-160 kph, but at higher speeds the car tends to "take off", especially when unloaded.

The engine has a decent performance, but lacks the torque under 3000 rpm. Is not by any chance a sport car, but cruising at reasonable speed is easy and comfortable.

Gearbox is quite "tight" and the clutch is sometimes difficult to operate; hopefully it will loose in time, the car is still new.

The car is very good equipped with almost everything coming as standard. My car is Expression trim which means 6 airbags, climate control, ABS/EBD, CD-player, power heated mirrors and 4 power windows, automatic lights/wipers, fog lamps, computer and so on as standard.

Economy is not bad for a car of its size with a gasoline engine - 10.5 liters/100km in town and 7,0-7,8 liters/100km outside, depending on the speed. If you go beyond 130kph the consumption will follow.

The sound quality is surprisingly high for such 15 watts speakers and the overall interior ambiance is nice and comfortably.

Giving its price - Euro 12360 without taxes - it is a lot of car for this money. The equipment and the design - inside and outside - are outstanding for this price class.

My only concern is its reliability in time. Renault warranty term in Romania is pathetic (just 18 months) and the roads here are quite tough.

I have a July 2004 dCi Sport Tourer which has recently suffered from a stiff gear change and difficulty getting it in to reverse gear. I have just picked it up from the dealership, where they have changed the gearbox oil and replaced the gear linkage (under warranty). This seems to have solved the problem, so if I was you, I would get your car to the dealer before the warranty runs out!

I came back with further details after 8 months. The car has now almost 20,000 km, but still no serious complain. Everything is working like in first day (actually even better, considering the fact that gearbox is working well now).

The only one exception is one retractable curtain from the right back door which, without any visible reason, remains blocked outside the door. The whole assembly has been changed by the dealer under warranty with no cost.

However I've been astonished when I saw the cost of the part on the dealer’s invoice (payable by the customer if there was no warranty) : almost 800 Eur!!! :)

Just a few comments regarding some annoying details:

The seat belt buzzer could drive you crazy if you want to go over the corner without putting it on;

The brake and the throttle pedals are too close placed so you may experience problems if you have some bigger shoes.

Anyway these are small issues for a car otherwise far better than expected.
