Faults:
Previous owner rebuilt the engine.
Oil pan was leaking when I bought it.
Voltage regulator needed to be replaced.
One of the screws holding intake manifold to the head was overtightened.
One of the cooling pipes leaked on the connection to the radiator.
Rear window heaters are ruined.
All the locks are out of order.
Some fuses loose contact from time to time.
Fuel tank was leaking.
The only real problem is rust. The car is disintegrating daily. The rear part of the chassis rusted away, and I'm waiting for the day when it will finally fall apart. I guess I got what I paid for...
General Comments:
Apart from rust problem, this car is amazing.
Everything is upside down. Engine is positioned along the center line, but it is a front wheel drive, gearbox is in front of it, screwed to the front of the car, there is a button on the floor for windshield washing pump, floor is flat, gearshift lever in the panel, it has Teflon wheel bearings, windows sliding to open, it has a chassis and body is just screwed to it, I find something odd about it everyday.
For the time when it was designed, I guess it has been a cutting-edge miracle on wheels..
Especially rear suspension, the same type has been used also for Dassau Mirage F1 combat airplane landing gear..
The car is ultralight, it is quick, handles great in corners once you get used to its weird behavior, good fuel economy, lots of room for everything, flat floor is great, Renault 4 is simple, easy to repair and it is fun to drive.
It will run on three wheels with one cylinder working. (not literally)
Engine sounds sweet, silent and accurate.
I looked at these cars with sheer disgust, untill I bought this one. It was the only logical choice for the money I had.
Rust is a big problem. If you don't know where to look, don't go buying one on your own or you will regret it. Chassis and body restauration costs more than one of these cars!
