2004 Honda Civic VTi 1.6 SOHC

Summary:

Good car, needs a beefier engine to take full advantage of suspension

Faults:

Nothing, for now.

General Comments:

The Civic in Singapore comes in two versions, the 1.6Vti and the 1.7Vti-S. My 1.6 is about 5 months old now, and has good body control in corners, with its stiff suspension. Unfortunately, this means that the ride may be a little jarring for those looking for cushier rides. Build quality is very good, and the engine is pokey, being the fastest 1.6 sedan in Singapore. Unfortunately, the suspension seems more than able to take anything the engine can throw at it.

2000 Honda Civic VTi 1.5 SOHC VTEC

Summary:

A class above the rest, but not cheap

Faults:

Air-con expansion valve needs replacing - lets out a whine now and then but does not affect its operation.

Wind cut noise on the A pillars at high speeds (110 km/h) - solved by the dealer adding a strip of rubber to each side of windshield seal at the A pillars.

Few minor rattles due to leather work and the alarm which was installed locally - solved by the dealer summarily at 1000km servicing.

General Comments:

Super smooth CVT transmission and much improved low end torque over the previous model - much more driveable with more go from 2000-5000 RPM. Above 5000 RPM, you know where the 15bhp loss compared with the old model came from - VTEC much milder and does not pin you to seat.

Extremely spacious cabin and boot - beats some 2 litre cars.

Very well screwed together and all panels shut with a solid feel.

Corners well due to the short front.

Taut jiggly ride due to the stiff suspension.

Rides very well at high speeds - you tend not to realize how fast you are going - very effortless for a 1.5L.

1998 Honda Civic VTi 1.5

Summary:

A good car

Faults:

When coming to a stop after a longer drive (>15Km), a metallic rubbing sound could be heard coming from the the engine compartment. It does not happen during stopping but immediately after stopping.

Just sent the car for servicing at 20,000 Km (including changing CVT oil) but problem not solved. I guess this could be due to CVT retracting but service technician had no comment.....
