2000 Volkswagen Beetle Highline 2.0

Summary:

Awesome cool car for an independent couple prior to having children

Faults:

The CV joints were replaced before delivery.

The auto window cable in driver side door broke - new part was R1000.00 fitted.

The ESP warning light keeps on coming on lately - not sure why.

The red water temperature light flashes every 2-3 weeks - topping up the water reservoir resolves it. Why is it using so much water?

Some strange knocking sound on the lower control arms or somewhere on the front suspension.

The dash/trim inside is soft and very fragile - inside panels gadgets loosely fitted. I think this is common with this generation VW.

Not enough boot space for family camping trips... hence selling...

General Comments:

A very nice drive for a sports coupe. Some say it's a woman's car. I think it's rather cool, and the 2.0 litre powerhouse performs well.

Fuel consumption is good for a 2 litre. Some conversions could save you a litre per 100km's (chip and freeflow exhaust system), but might cost R5000.

Very nice driving experience. Seems to be a reliable starter and runner for town drives.

1961 Volkswagen Beetle 1.2

Summary:

It is still more reliable than most cheap plastic new cars

Faults:

I had to replace the king and link pins just after I bought it.

Driver's seat is badly worn.

Replaced the exhaust after a year, hard to find.

Converted the electrical system from 6 volts to 12 volts, because of the traffic police (lights too dim).

Bought new tires.

The accelerator cable broke, the first and only time this car ever left me stranded.

General Comments:

She is now 42 years old, of which I have had her for 5 years as the second owner. This is an amazing machine, very basic, but totally unbreakable. It was a very sad day when I sold her.

Top speed after about three hills on a highway is 65 mph, the fourth gear runs from 35 mph right through to 65 mph.

You got a speedster there.

1975 Volkswagen Beetle 1600S 1.6 petrol

Faults:

This car was practically brand new when I bought it and I paid 50 times the price it was at new, but in comparison to any other car in that price range, I had no trouble becuase I drive well and the build quality was just excellent. I will never part with it.

It's a pity though that Volkswagen here in South Africa won't help out in any way even though there are still so many on the roads. Their loss I guess, they could make a bundle of money!

General Comments:

Damn, this car is built so strong, like it's made of bricks. Very solid, it once rolled into a wall from a hill and all I had to replace was the bumper and the 2 indicator lenses in the bumper :)

Bad brakes.

Very cosy interior.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

I think that Porsche 356 disc brakes will fit, but I guess they are hard to find in South Africa...

I recently bought one 1976 Beetle 1600S made in South Africa with curve wind screen, full size dash board, king pin suspension, upright spare tyre and roystyle rims.

1303 tail light.

Anyone has more information on this model?

No one has believe me that this is an original model.
