1990 Alfa Romeo 164 Twin Spark Lusso 2.0 petrol

Summary:

A high performance (and increasingly rare) bargain

Faults:

Surprisingly little.

Oil pressure sender at 75,000.

First new clutch at 146,000.

Fuel pump relay (and one or two other relays) at around 150,000.

Electric window motor at 75,000.

The usual trailing arm bushes every 50,000 or so.

General Comments:

Probably the most reliable (and enjoyable) car I've had in thirty five years driving.

1990 Alfa Romeo 164 Lusso 3.0 V6 petrol

Summary:

Great performance, classic styling, dodgy electrics

Faults:

Starter motor wiring problems (several times).

Exhaust (all has been replaced - in two goes).

Clutch (but car had done ~80,000 on previous ones).

Air conditioning (the stepper motors - a common, and very expensive to fix problem).

General Comments:

Turn on the aircon (if the car has it). If you hear any clicks get out and ignore the car ASAP - the clicks are the stepper motors in the aircon unit on their way out - cost to repair ~£800-£1000 !!!

The car has been great fun to drive, though it has also been dogged by the occasional electrical problem. The aircon going was a real nightmare. The car also goes through tyres like nobody's business.

The engine has to be one of the best sounding units around on the roads today.

No you're not alone. This car has an appalling turning circle - you have to plan your 3-point manoeuvres carefully. But so what. rev out that V6 to 6500 and youll remember what owning a 164 is all about..
