1991 Alfa Romeo 33 ie 1.5

Summary:

Reliable but dull, expected more

Faults:

Rear passenger door handle no longer opened door.

Syncromesh very weak on 1st and 2nd gears.

Paintwork needed polishing, but it was Alfa red...

Terrible brakes.

General Comments:

We bought this Alfa from someone who had lavished much time and money on her; consequently she cost us very little to maintain.

I replaced the brake pads and shoes all round, and gave her a full service, and she never let us down. The brakes were still terrible.

Having had a 'sud before, I expected more, but the front end was a bit soggy, and she ran out of go when you expected the boxer engine to have more oomph.

Light and economical, and you could sling lots of stuff in the back with the seats down. But not exciting like an Alfa should be.

1991 Alfa Romeo 33 cloverleaf 1.7 16v Boxer Flat Four Quad Cam.

Summary:

My baby

Faults:

Bad suspension legs and rubbers very bouncy.

Bottom ends in Engine went at 150000.

Gearbox went, seized at 100000.

General Comments:

The best car god created. Not the most comfortable in the world, but what sports car is.

Suspension very bad, put some shortened shocks and springs and not only will the car look really smart, but it will handle twice as good as it does normally and it stops the bounce.

If you have about £3,500 spare chuck it in to the Alfa main dealers and have a brand new 1.7 Flat Four Quad Cam Boxer dropped into it accompanied with a further £1,500 to spend on a brand new gearbox, and like us you will have a seriously smart looking and very quick car. With a big set of wheels lowered suspension all the cloverleaf side skirts and bumpers, some nice silver mesh for the grill, and a nice ice sound system, a power-flow stainless from end to end and you will end up with something like we have. It would blow your head off. Best £9,000 ever spent!

1991 Alfa Romeo 33 ie 1.7

Summary:

A very high performance bargain!

Faults:

Needed a new clutch.

Gearbox was on its way out.

Little rust.

General Comments:

This car seems like it has been built to race! The engine loved the high revs!

It handles very well, I could chuck it round corners and it still grips as if it were on rails!

Altogether I love this car!

1991 Alfa Romeo 33 Permanent 4 1.7

Summary:

Racing car on the road

Faults:

Water pump replaced as a precaution as it started squeaking.

Prop-shaft bearing failed.

General Comments:

It's very quick and has tremendous grip and roadholding.

It looks very aggressive and is a rare car.

It's been very reliable, given the use it's been given.

Most of the parts I have changed are down to normal wear and tear (brakes pads, tyres, exhaust etc.)

Clutch and gearbox are all original and the engine has never been apart.

Electrics have been faultless.

Interior trim seems a bit fragile - nothing's actually broken but it marks quite easily.

1991 Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 ie 1.7 petrol

Faults:

The gearbox lever has a rattle, and the gearbox has seized before (although this was because the dealer who serviced it had forgotten to replace an oil gasket).

General Comments:

Strong performance, good looks, and it hasn't rusted as much as I thought it would!

If you'd bother to take good care of it it wouldn't rust at all!!!

Great car to own, strong performance, bimmer-eater. Problems with the gearbox: 3rd and reverse, the handbrake and electronics. No rust for 10 years.
