1992 Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 16v 1.7 16v boxer

Summary:

Caught fire and got scrapped. A typical old Alfa then!

Faults:

Engine expired.

Rear door lock didn't work with central locking.

General Comments:

After listening to all the reports about old Alfas (33s in particular), I still went ahead and bought this one.

Boy did I regret it!

You'd think the fact it'd had only 2 owners and not done starship Enterprise miles that it would've been o.k, but oh no.

I thought at first that after it kept not starting the battery might be faulty, as putting a boost box on it seemed to get it going, but one morning it just wouldn't go.

A friend who used to service these told me that the spark plugs are near the ground due to the engine design, and as they get damp the engine won't fire.

We tried and tried starting it, and ended up towing it with a 4x4 to try and get it going, it wasn't having any of it!

Then it went into a local garage, who tried starting it, they got a bit worried when the engine caught fire!!

Time to give up and scrap it I thought.

Luckily it was only a 3rd car and intended as a bit of fun, so didn't affect me that much.

From when I actually did drive it, I can say that performance is great for a 1.7, handling was alright-not as good as I expected (and awful in the wet), despite new tyres, the driving position would suit an ape, and the engine sounded good, but I'm sure you'd be reaching for the painkillers after a journey.

All in all, one of my worst ever buys (and there've been a lot), not a very good car even when working, and as bad as all the rumours about reliability suggested.

Couldn't agree more with this review. Bought my 91 (H) at four years old with 44,000 genuine miles, one owner and FSH.

It was a lovely looking car, and nice to drive, but let me down after just three days, and then proceeded to land me with a series of bills, and rescue service callouts that saw me sell the car in just six weeks.

I would never buy another. I would expect far greater driving thrills than this to even think about putting up with such appalling reliability.

1992 Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 16V

Summary:

No regrets in getting the car

Faults:

Nothing much except I broke the timing belt.

I did the top overhaul by changing the valves.

The brakes tend to give way.

The body has started to rust already.

General Comments:

A fantastic car to drive. Will keep until I decide to change to 156 or 147 Selespeed.

1992 Alfa Romeo 33 P4 1.7 16V petrol

Faults:

When purchased the rubber mountings for the viscous coupling were replaced.

Brake disks will require replacement when the pads are next changed.

Troublesome aftermarket alarm, which locks the door and arms itself after 20 seconds, even if the keys are still in the car.

General Comments:

Nice car, fair on petrol and also quick. Bought to replace an Alfa 75. I have only owned this car 10,000 miles so it has not had much of a chance to go wrong, but has more than its fair share of squeaks and rattles.

Faults:

4WD sensor blew, gear box noisy, rattles everywhere.

Very quick, but needs time to get warmed up. Very reliable, and much nicer than an Escort. Engine great, build quality poor.

Hello I'm currently considering buying a 1991 Alfa 33s P4. this care has a blown 4WD sensor. Are they expensive to repair? and with your car once repaired did it give you any more trouble?

Maz from Australia.
