1999 Alfa Romeo GTV Lusso 3.0 V6 24v

Summary:

This is performance motoring at its cheapest

Faults:

Let me first say this car is all about driving so the following things are minor unless you're into that sort of thing.

Crap stereo, dodgy wipers. That's it!

BTW, keep an eye on the oil, it loves the black stuff.

General Comments:

This is without a doubt a fabulous car. It guzzles fuel when you floor it but wow, this car is seriously quick and the noise from that V6 is beautiful.

When it goes over bumps and pot holes, you really feel it but who cares. I test drove the 2.0L and then the 3.0L and the difference is huge in terms of acceleration, performance. And oh yeah, fuel consumption and insurance.....

If you are going for a GTV, make it the 3.0L if you can. The 2.0L is good, but this thing is great.

1999 Alfa Romeo GTV Twin Spark 2.0

Summary:

Looks and performance of a Ferrari but at a bargain price

Faults:

Driver's airbag warning light has been repaired several times due to the electronics being stored under the passenger seat???

Problems with the windows not fitting into the seals properly.

General Comments:

Great car with stunning looks.

The performance is wonderful and the road holding is the best in this class by a long way. The engine noise alone makes you smile everytime you turn the ignition key.

This is a true sports coupe which like all cars seems to be let down by poor dealers. If only the dealers could fix cars as well as they can sell them.

The problem with the window seals can be cured quite easily.

The problem occurs with the top seal.

Look at this seal, and you can identify a hooked over rubber bit, that runs the length of the seal. Where the window slots into.

Using a very sharp knife, cut this rubber bit off, the whole length.

You can do a good job by pulling the seal away from the body as you run the knife along the rubber.

Trim any excess rubber to make it look good.

This will totally cure the wind noise problem and still provide a good waterproof seal.

Superb chassis strength!

Wonderful braking power, also with the ABS, that annoyes some people, but has saved me from several incidents.

The airbag problem happened when someone moved to hard the driver seat (In the car wash). And the problem was solved by disconnecting the battery for some minutes (I saw the Alfa people doing it, and they said they had to connect the car to a computer, FALSE).

Good fuel saving in city driving and highway to.

Slow in city, but fast in highway.

The engine cuts at 7500 RPM.

We went 220 km/h (Sorry Dad) at 7000 RPM.

Greetings From Spain.

1999 Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0 24v 6-Speed

Summary:

Great fun, great looks, great noise! What else could you ask for?

Faults:

Power steering lost all its fluid due to a pitted washer on one of the pipes.

Rattles and squeaks from the front suspension.

Wind noise from the windows.

General Comments:

Great fun to drive - haven't stopped smiling since I picked it up - a real head turner due to it's relative rarity on UK roads.

Engine noise very quiet at cruising speeds, but racous when accelerating hard - best of both worlds. Handling is very forgiving for bad driving and always does what it's told to do.

Boot isn't very wide front to back, but it's surprisingly deep so a full suitcase does fit.

Petrol consumption is what you'd expect - poor, but who cares when you're having this much fun?

1999 Alfa Romeo GTV Lusso 3.0 V6

Summary:

Orgasmic

Faults:

Engine failed within days of purchase due to faulty fuel injection cut-off. The passenger door mirror has stopped working and the drivers door speaker has a detached coil.

I needed four new tyres at 9,000 miles and usually get c.22 mpg.

General Comments:

Fantastic performance and an engine note to die for. This is an enthusiasts car - you need to check the oil every two weeks if you do a high mileage - but it is very rewarding to drive. There is some wind noise from the drivers door. There is no boot. Don't think of putting anyone in the back (unless they are 2' 6" tall!!) but if these matter to you, buy a Ford Transit...
