1987 Audi 80 S 1.8

Summary:

Top car - will keep it until at least 200,000 miles

Faults:

Clutch master cylinder @ 140,000.

Clutch @ 155,000.

Front suspension mountings @ 160,000.

Rear axle bushes @ 170,000 (causes a scary, but not dangerous clanking noise!)

Carburettor mounting cracked @ 170,000.

One CV joint @ 186,000.

Other than that, usual wear and tear items...

General Comments:

For such an old car, which gets such a hammering (it lives in London and does a 55 mile round trip to work every day), it's fantastic. Pretty economical on long runs, and OK round town, it's always been totally reliable - apart from the above faults. My dad had it from 50 000 miles onwards, and it was good as gold for him, too.

Galvanised, so there's no rust. The only gripe is the ludicrous boot. Oh, and the heated rear windscreen, which keeps breaking.

1987 Audi 80 S 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Nothing special - except that it is ten years old now :-) Only the usual repairs for a car with nearly 200,000 km (costs for them are relatively high, though).

General Comments:

Looks still not like an "old" car, comfortable, low fuel consumption (7.5-8 l/100km). Next car will be an Audi, too.
