1996 BMW 3 Series 318ti Compact Sport Pack 1.9 16v
Summary:
Sporty and reliable fun little car
Faults:
Crankcase valve.
Lambda sensor.
Rubbish handbrake.
I bought the car with a fresh MOT, but I felt it needed new front discs and pads. It also needs a balljoint doing, due to the rubbish roads, not really the car's fault at this age!
A rattle from the rear was traced to the handbrake shoes being loose; 10 minutes later all was quiet.
General Comments:
This car is great, I finally bought one after many years of liking them after my Mum had a 316i Lux brand new in 96. I went for the bigger engine though, as the 1.6 is sluggish in my opinion. It rides very well, handles excellently and is pretty nippy.
The car is 14 years old now, so I expect it will need some work occasionally, but it's well worth it for the amount you get for your money. 140bhp, 37mpg and cheap insurance all add up to a nice little package.
My car has the Sport pack (note, not the later factory Sport model) which means front fogs, 15 inch alloys, body coloured deeper sills and fantastic sports seats.
Standard fit speakers are excellent, and while it's not lavishly equipped, electric windows, sunroof and central locking are there. As are ABS, power steering and an airbag.
It cruises very quietly at speed, totally smooth and vibration free, it feels like a much larger car, but it's very easy to park due to its short length.
The 1.9 16v engine is a gem, really revvy and makes a good noise. Fantastic on the motorway, effortless overtaking, 5th gear takes you from 30mph to way beyond a sensible cruising speed!
The simpler rear suspension means more oversteer in the rain than a saloon/coupe, which suits me, and it's also far cheaper to repair. The 1 piece dash means less rattles than my friend's saloon of the same age; that is none in my car, lots in his!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

The 328 Sports isn't that fast. I beat them all day long in my integra type r.
