1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4

Summary:

Cheap, better than a VTR etc. Fast, reliable

Faults:

Only one problem, but nothing that any other car wouldn't have.

One wheel bearing, fixed by me at cost of £38, but come on, the beast had done over 100000.

General Comments:

SO quick. Amazing on fuel. Put a modded engine in it; cammed, skimmed, ported, valves, vernier pulley. Full exhaust, including manifold. And put an MG Maestro twin carb on it, putting it up to 137bhp.

The thing was dangerous, but so much fun to drive. A white van man drove into me at what he said was 30 (more like 45-50) and wrote the thing off, but I was totally fine, and it was sold and repaired, and is now living in Bridgeport as far as I'm aware. SO WATCH OUT!!

Nothing made me happier than watching VTRs, GTE Novas and bigger cars (and even bigger cars when I put the tuned engine in) vanish in the rear view as they tried to overtake. Great looking car.

Now own a modded Focus. Faster, but not as much fun!

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4gt carb

Summary:

Very high performance tho alway breaks

Faults:

My head gasket blew shortly after having it after about 100 miles.

Wing mirrors adjustments broke.

Head lamp mounting clips broke.

Gear box plate broke got stuck in first fun!!.

Thrush baring on gear box collapsed.

Gudgeon pin on piston broke.

Piston ring worn burning oil.

Goodbye AX gt.

General Comments:

The ax gt is a great car to drive and is very fast, but that is when it is running.

The body work on mine is superb the car handles great since lowering although speed bumps are a big hazard.

Will beat most cars fairly easy to 60 anyways.

1990 Citroen AX 10 E 1L

Summary:

Superb car for those with a small wallet i.e. students

Faults:

Bonnet corroded badly, but cost £5 for a reclaimed one.

Upholstery showing some where and tear.

Interior side handles need replacing as they have disintegrated.

Gearbox replaced at 80,000 miles.

General Comments:

The car itself is nippy from the start, but struggles at the top end.

The handling is superb, almost as light as a feather.

The manual choke can be a bit annoying and can use a lot of petrol, otherwise under normal running conditions fuel consumption is very low.

Insurance is shockingly cheap.

The car as a whole is easy to maintain and mine has suffered little engine trouble (it has not broken down within the three years I have had it)

Cosmetic defects are relatively cheap and easy to put right.

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4

Summary:

Far too fast to be safe!!!

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong so far..

Which is odd as it has 150'000 miles on it. Its been well looked after, but I'm waiting for bits to start dropping off it.

General Comments:

This is my second AX GT, my previous one was executed by a big van.

The Mileage is pretty high so I am planning on rebuilding the engine from my previous GT and using it in this one.

These cars are wonderful once they are running fine, they do tend to squeak & rattle, but this can usually be fixed by attacking these areas with a can of WD40.

I would recommend upgrading the brakes if you aren't fond of using the back of cars/walls/trees to stop.

What is with those huge Bottle holders in the doors? who has bottles that big?

1990 Citroen AX 1.1

Summary:

A reliable, nippy and cheap fun car

Faults:

Brake fluid line split.

Clutch went around 70,000 miles.

Key broke in ignition! (Was told this is a common fault!)

Exhaust.

Wheel bearings.

General Comments:

Although the list of faults sounds long, the clutch, exhaust and wheel bearings are standard problems on old cars.

The car performs consistently well and for a 1.1ltr is very fast, both off the mark and on the motorway however it does suffer when loaded with people.

It doesn't handle too bad, the steering can be a bit light sometimes.

It's comfortable for a small car and being a hatchback it's versatile - you can fold down the rear seats and exploit a reasonable amount of space in the rear of the car.

It's very cheap to run on petrol, the insurance is low and as long as you don't go to a Citroen dealer maintenance is not expensive.

I would definately recommend this car to any city dweller with a small budget.
