1991 Citroen AX GT 500 1.4

Summary:

Fast and handles well, but expensive when things go wrong!

Faults:

Only the usual wear and tear, although my last service cost £360!

A Citroen garage have found 4 separate oil leaks from the head gasket, gearbox and 2 other places I can't remember! They think it will cost over £1000 pounds to get only the main leaks fixed!

General Comments:

I'm positive my car is lacking power even though it is quite old. Maybe this has something to do with the oil leaks?

It still shifts at quite a rate though and the handling is also very good. Shame about the brakes though, seriously bad at stopping you quickly, emergency stops are practically impossible in this car!

The half leather seats though are a nice addition and pretty comfortable. The pedals are far too close together though!

I would recommend one to anyone who's thinking of buying one to make sure you check it over throughly before buying as there are a lot of duds about!

1991 Citroen AX GT 1.4

Summary:

A steal at the price

Faults:

Drivers seat is broken in.

Fog lamps are smashed.

Heaters don't work.

Electric window motors packed in.

CV boot is burst.

Driveshaft end is away on the driver's side.

General Comments:

The registration plate I have just found out is worth £1200 - and the car is been off the road for over a month getting fixed up.

This is not my first AX, however this GT has been neglected by the previous owner and is now almost restored back to new.

It's very quick and handles on corners like you wouldn't believe, it still has the red stripe on the carpet glowing and no rust under the bonnet.

1991 Citroen AX GT 1.4

Summary:

Bad boy

Faults:

Engine smoking due to worn valve stem oil seals (now sorted).

Usual stuff - battery, tyres etc...

General Comments:

This motor is a bad-boy, it loves kicking the crap out of Nova's at the lights.

It has recently been rolling road tuned and is putting out 80bhp @ the wheels, more than enough to see off most hatches due to its light weight.

Handling has been sorted by up-rating the suspension, engine has been properly set up to run with a K&N filter and sports exhaust..

P.S - it's the quickest 1400 I know of off the mark!

Apart from a 5 turbo of course!!

1991 Citroen AX GT500 1.4

Summary:

The Devil's go-kart!

Faults:

Fog lamps filled with water and refused to work ever since.

Radiator leaked from day one, thermostat was replaced four times.

Plastic skirts fell off the passenger side, which took a small fortune to replace and many hours of struggling to attach to the car.

Rear windscreen wiper ran intermittently, especially in winter.

Electric windows were slow and sometimes clunky.

Small stone chips on the bonnet turned into rust far too easily. Garage said that the paint job done on the bonnet was of poor quality.

Dashboard and door-pockets rattled even on the smoothest of surfaces.

General Comments:

As most of my friends had owned AX GT's in one shape or form, I decided to go for that model that was just a little different from all the others.

Had an A.A. check on the vehicle, who said that it was a sound car and although at the time of purchasing had a few minor faults, with them corrected by the garage, was worth the money.

This car never failed to make me smile. Every-time you sit in the seat of an AX GT you know you are going to enjoy the journey.

For the size of the engine, this pocket-rocket shifts like nothing I've ever driven - early Golf's, XR3's, XR2's and SR's alike.

Honestly, other drivers will be amazed to see a tiny Citroen out strip them up the motorway slip road or along a dual carriageway.

Problems start, as they did with my pals vehicles, at around 70,000 miles. Until then, I had very few problems, but since then it felt as though the car was gradually falling apart.

Problems aside, I can't recommend these cars enough. If you want value, thrills and exceptional handling, then look no further than an AX.

I don't know about problems starting at 70000 miles. I had one with 108000 miles on and never had a spot of bother with it. Well apart from some little scum nicking it and writing it off for me. But what an absolute rocket, and plan to have another one soon.
