1993 Citroen AX Dimension 3 door 1.1i petrol

Summary:

Ideal first car, wouldn't have had it any other way

Faults:

The cambelt has pinged off once.

Replaced the battery once.

General Comments:

Brilliant little run around car.

However not suitable for dual carriageways or motorways; would be a great city car!

1993 Citroen AX GT 1.4

Summary:

Wicked car, but it's hard to find a good one

Faults:

Air conditioning fans stopped working at 46k.

CV joint fell apart at 48k.

Fuel filler neck rotted out at 48k.

Alternator broke at 50k.

Fuel gauge never worked.

General Comments:

This was my first car and it was great fun, a real pocket rocket.

It was the GT engine with the GTI body kit (only 500 made like this). Handled really well and acceleration was really good. Top end was meant to be 120mph, but I never took it over 90mph, as it started to feel a bit light and would drift a bit.

Really nice dash and interior, which just felt like sitting in a little race car.

The boot was big enough for a boxed 15" sub, but the back seats were quite small unless you were a hobbit.

The car was pretty good when I got it, but things slowly started to go wrong.

Air conditioners stopped working, but I never bothered to fix them.

CV joint fell apart and was a nightmare to get a new one as Citroen wanted £110, so I went to the scrappage yard where I found out that the AX's used 5 different CV joints in two years, and there was no pattern to which one your car would have.

Fuel filler neck rotted out, which was connected to the filler pipe in a one piece; a real pain to get sorted, but didn't cost much.

Alternator broke, but was only £30 for a new one.

Had to take it off the road as the rust got too bad on the sills and arches, and was going to fix it, but got sent to Iraq with the army, and when I got back it was just too far gone to fix.

Really really loved this car, and wish I still had one. Have been looking for a good one for a few years, but they are very few and far between. All seem to be rusting on the rear aches.

1993 Citroen AX Echo 1.4D

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

Exhaust after leak was discovered - cost £40 complete.

Dashboard bulbs - changed all, but one cost nothing. Got them off a scrap AX, and the same with the speedo cable.

Speedo cable broke during changing of the bulbs.

Front brake pads and handbrake cable.

General Comments:

This car has been in the family from new, and I will keep it until it dies, as it's such a good little car, which does 65-70 mpg and has never let me down. I've been up and down the country several times.

1993 Citroen AX Jive 1.0L (954cc) SPi

Summary:

A great first car, with good tuning potential

Faults:

The battery was being drained when the car was off, traced to a a short circuit or faulty wiring at the rear window heaters.

CV joints are starting to knock loudly on tight corners (constant velocity joints), need replacing soon.

Clutch appears to slip at high revs, but it might just be me not releasing the pedal quickly enough.

General Comments:

Nice and nippy car, feels damn fast for a 1.0L.

Took it for a track session at Silverstone Race Circuit, and apart from immense body roll, it has great handling and good gearing (4 speed box), I was doing corners at up to 60mph!!!

Not much head room for my helmet though, a tight squeeze.

1993 Citroen AX HighLight 1.0i

Summary:

This is the best cheap-to-run car you'll ever have

Faults:

Small radiator leak at 45000 miles, it had rusted through at bottom hose point.

General Comments:

Cheaper than getting the bus to work. This car is amazing at saving me money. It was the boss's wife's car so I knew the low mileage and one owner story was correct.

The placing of the foot pedals does make long drives uncomfortable for me (but I'm six feet tall)

I don't like the added 'dotty' decals down each side and on interior fabric.
