1989 Citroen BX GTi 8v 1.9

Summary:

Cheap, fast, comfortable cruiser

Faults:

Valve stem seals.

Low pressure return pipes.

Alternator.

Rear suspension arm bearings.

Interior bulbs.

Brake pads.

General Comments:

The repair list looks quite horrific for a car I've only owned for a year, but I think the costs can be offset by the very low purchase price of this model.

All repairs & servicing have been done by myself. If you don't indulge in D.I.Y mechanics I would avoid this model like the plague!

The previous owner had a lot of major repairs done on the car by a garage e.g clutch, suspension work & exhaust. When the valve stem seals failed I suppose he decided to get rid of it. He had spent over a thousand pounds on it less than a year.

1989 Citroen BX GTi 16v 1.9i 16v petrol

Faults:

Front anti-roll bar bushes.

Front ball joints (both).

Idle actuator faulty.

ABS wheel sensor.

General Comments:

This car is a stormer now, with head work, starchip, s/s exhaust, now puts out 220 bhp, for only 2000 pounds total!

0-60 is now 5.9seconds (tested at Bruntingthorpe proving grounds)

Really surprises Impreza Turbo owners!

Sorry, that is impossible, and if it's true I'll take my words back and buy a 16 valve head for my 8v GTi BX!

1989 Citroen BX DTR Turbo Estate 1.7 turbo diesel

Faults:

Hydraulic system very quirky, but parts available from independents at v. reasonable prices. Air in brakes, power steering ram failed, radiator failed, LHM pump failed.

General Comments:

THE most reliable engine. Never not been able to start the car. Fun to drive and really comfortable. Surprising performance, easily cruises at 90mph. Economy wonderful, preferrs long motorway drives rather than towns, but economical all the time. At 158,000 miles, car still has little rust and runs nicely.

AVOID dealerships like the plague, get work done at independent garages to avoid extortionate prices, and at least once was directly lied to by dealership because the car was "worn out".

Mine has got 430 000 km!

1989 Citroen BX 14 Leader 1.4 petrol

Faults:

At 130,000 miles starter motor, ignition, alternator, coil, valves, but I cannot complain for its age and mileage.

General Comments:

Excellent car, good to drive. Would recommend one to anyone who wants a cheap, reliable, practical vehicle for everyday use.

I'm from Portugal and I have a BX too. Sorry, but I think that it is not a everyday car because I use a lot of petrol every day!

Here in Italy we can easily put on the installation for fueling with the cheaper auto-gas: LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas: Propane + Butane) or Methane, and we march for long! (with Methane in the most brilliant way)

1989 Citroen BX GTi 1.9 8v petrol

Faults:

Valve stem oils seals at 95,000 miles;

Clutch cable at 98,000 miles;

Clutch assembly and clutch lever at 100,012 miles!

Alternator at 105,000 miles;

Handbrake cable at 106,000 miles;

Fuel pipes rusted through at 104,000 miles;

Front suspension spheres needed replaced at 100,000 miles;

Front suspension struts are creaking now and probably need replaced (107,000 miles).

General Comments:

Very fast, very comfortable, no body rust and still looks fresh. Reliabilty is becoming a problem now and dealer parts are not cheap although the main dealer is very helpful.
