2004 Citroen C2 LX 1.4 HDI turbo diesel
Summary:
Excellent cheap motoring
Faults:
A noise that sounds like a squeaky groan when the engine moves - doesn't seem to be causing any problems though.
General Comments:
I bought this as a cheap as chips runabout until I can afford something newer and more luxurious, but it's such a good little car I'd be a fool to get rid of it. The mileage the car has racked up with the previous owner is quite amazing for a little car like this. The engine runs as sweet as; no smoke, no rattles, no oil usage.
The only real problem is with the quality of finish of the plastics and paint work. Citroen have saved money by painting with a very thin layer of paint, and the plastics on the interior are a bit scratchy and cheap, but then all these things mean the car is cheap to buy and is light too.
The car is averaging 55 mpg. I do very short journeys through the week, and then one decent motorway run most weekends, so 55 mpg average is quite impressive.
Everything still works on the car, no faults at all. Really can't complain about this car other than the boot is tiny, but that was a sacrifice worth making for such cheap motoring.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

With regard to a recall being out out, I think you'll find that's the difference between buying something like a Citroen and a Toyota in the first place.
Though Toyota got a real kicking in the press, at least they put a recall out, probably because they're a major player in the US market, whereas Citroen are pretty much only European.
As for your comment about an older car being more reliable, from experience my wife's had problems with quite a lot of her brand new company cars, examples include -- Front passenger door not opening from inside, wipers and indicators failing at the same time, aircon packing up, a seat adjuster snapping, hesitant acceleration, rear suspension bushes wearing prematurely, a multi-function display cutting in and out etc etc. Most of these were with a Saab 9-5, though not all, and one was with a Toyota!
Come to think of it, she's had problems with every new car she's ever had, because they're new it just means she can get stuff under warranty!
