2004 Citroen C2 GT 1.6

Summary:

Great car, shame about the dealers

Faults:

After having the car for about a month I noticed a noise from the rear brakes when maneuvering at low speed. After taking the car to a local dealer who stripped and cleaned the rear brakes the problem was still not resolved. I decided to try a different dealer in the area. The second dealer knew about this fault and had the relevant parts in stock and the fault was fixed a couple of days later.

After having the car for four months a grinding noise started, coming from the front brakes. The car went back to the second dealer who stripped and cleaned the front brakes. This however did not sort out the problem. The car was returned to the garage and I have now been told that the noise is down to rust on the calipers. The garage recommend that the calipers are stripped and cleaned and that the brake pads are replaced (even though they are not fully worn). The only problem with this is that this fault is apparently not covered by the warranty.

I have had many discussions with various people at my local dealership, Citroen UK and the dealership from where I purchased the car. No one is willing to pay for this problem to be fixed. Instead I am expected to pay approximately £250 to fix it. The car is six months old and has 8000 miles on the clock. To my knowledge calipers should not rust with that kind of usage and brake pads should not need replacing after 8000 miles. But what do I know? I only have a Degree in Automotive Engineering.

My discussions with the relevant people are currently on-going.

A non-fault also occurred. The dealership reported a rattle from the off-side front suspension. A noise that I had not noticed myself, but they had noticed when taking the car for an excessively long test drive. The car went back in to the dealership for further inspection of the suspension and another excessively long test drive, I highly reccommend noting the mileage before the car goes in to a dealership, for me to be told that they could not find a fault.

General Comments:

On the plus side this car is great fun to drive, motorways or country roads makes no difference.

I still love this car, despite all of the hassle, but only just.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

Hi. This is to the writer of the review: have you had any contact regarding your front brakes? I have EXACTLY the same problem (grinding, squealing noise at all speeds etc), and had the same response, i.e. that it wasn't covered by the warranty. It would be good to know the outcome of your enquiries.

A friend of mine who is currently in dispute with Citroen has had exactly the same problem. If either of the above authors have had any resolution with regards to this matter I would be extremely interested in hearing from you again on this page.

Thanks.

I have just purchased a 2004 HDi C2 this month, and have had the squealing of the N/S front brake constantly at all speeds which only disappears when I apply the brakes. I was going to to Citroen about this - but it seems from your comments that they are not willing to cover this. Please let me know how you get on.

Summary:

A great car, fun to drive and well worth the money

Faults:

The car has problems starting first time in cold conditions. I wouldn't have expected this for a car only 4 months old.

The fuel gauger on the dashboard is incorrect. I filled my car up the brink and only 5 of the 6 lights were displayed. I've been told by my dealer that this needs realigning and that I obviously have more petrol than is being shown.

General Comments:

The handling of this car is excellent, the best I have come across so far and you can quickly get a feel of what the car is all about.

In my opinion the car is at it's best from a standing position (eg at traffic lights) Where you can really put your foot down and pass most cars without effort.

The interior is really nice, The seats and steering wheel have a nice feel to them and there's plenty of space for two people. Space in the back however is very cramped for a third and fourth passenger.

I've had my C2 VTR for just over a year and I've experienced the same problems with the fuel gauge. It's been to the dealer 7 times, the first six times they denied there was a problem even though it seemed blatantly obvious to me. No amount of re calibrating or running diagnostics fixes the problem. Having taken the car to a different dealer I have discovered that this is a common problem and software version 39.1 (due out soon) will fix this. Keep pestering your dealer!

I've had my GT two years, and had endless trouble with it. Mainly ball joints, lack of power, rattling from the engine, and today I pressure washed it and the rear spring snapped right in front of me. It's the last one I'll buy.
