1998 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6i
Summary:
A fun little car for young ones
Faults:
Fuel pump broke one week after purchase.
Power steering sometimes a bit lumpy.
General Comments:
The car as a whole seems to be quite impressive so far. Its 1600cc engine gives you the impression that you can beat anything else on the road - which is a problem I found when I had my butt kicked by a Golf GTi recently. Although it seems very quick, performance isn't all that great. There are a lot of larger cars around that can match its acceleration, and you have to really push it hard before you can start beating people at the lights. I'd be more than willing to put my foot right down if I knew that I wouldn't have to spend so much on petrol after.
However, I don't think the acceleration is the most important aspect, because the handling will have you taking corners faster than most cars. The car sticks to the road and after taking a corner at excessive speed, leaves a fairly smug grin on your face.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with any other car, considering I'm only 18 - other cars with the same performance and handling couldn't expect to be a group 7 insurance. It still costs a fair bit though - I'm paying £1600 for third party insurance, but surprisingly only a few hundred pounds more than my Clio 1.2.
The Saxo VTR is great for young drivers, because it turns heads and offers the best performance out of the low insurance range, but once you turn 30 you should seriously consider getting rid of it. It has a boy racer image and there's nothing more depressing than seeing grown men zipping around in this young boy's car.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Oh my god, £1600 third party! Don't be put off by reading that, as I am only 19 with a VTR and I pay £980 Fully Comp. It's a great car to drive, mines silver with blue dials. Very stylish! It looks very sexy and is extremely nippy! For the price range you get a hell of a bargain!
