1993 Citroen ZX Avantage 1.4

Summary:

Cheap and generally chearful so long as its been looked after

Faults:

Light bulbs blow all the time.

The fan for the heater works on an intermittant basis

Fuel injection problems, stepper motor (expensive to fix!)

Head Gasket starting to leak, as oil in header tank.

Drive shafts, two in cars history.

Battery, 3 in last two years!

General Comments:

Brakes fade easily when used in a hot climate, also not up to the job of stopping the car from speed.

The gear box is obnoxious when cold.

The car sounds like a diesel

Lack of power steering a serious omission as need biceps bigger than big daddy to park

Not that fuel efficient around town.

Needs to be driven above 80 mph before engine quietens down, then it drinks fuel like its going out of style.

Interior is comfy, if not a bit bland, also electric windows in 2 door version are very slow.

Good on tires, as only had to put one set on in 5 years.

1993 Citroen ZX Avantage 1.4i

Summary:

An inexpensive pleasure

Faults:

Upon purchase it was discovered to have a speed sensor fault resulting in an occasional chug

There is the occasional clunk as the car pulls away. This could be down to a detached engine mounting or a ball joint having gone awry

Other than that usual wear and tear.

General Comments:

A nice lively drive considering the engine size compared to the chassis size.

Could really use power steering especially when trying to park in small space

Lots of rear leg room in the back.

Very reasonable on insurance and tax.

1993 Citroen ZX 2.0 16v

Summary:

A fantastic car, but I wonder why there was no T-16?

Faults:

Nothing major in particular. I had a nail go through the sidewall of a brand new Michelin Pilot, which was a bummer.

The exhaust rusted through, but that's because the previous owner had fit a Kwik-fit botch-up and it hung down too far. I noticed that it had been scraped underneath and this ripped it out.

The gear stick makes a rattling noise at 70mph (sigh) and I've replaced several bits bar the stick itself!

General Comments:

One minor gripe, why don't Citroen use screws? They seem to clip everything together and this causes things to rattle! I hate rattles and vibrations!

Other than that, it's quick and fun and handles superbly. You don't realise just how good until you drive something else!

Poor fuel economy, compared to what I'm used to, and insurance is high at group 15. I'm only 21!

1993 Citroen ZX Aura TD 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

It'll bring lots of money to your mechanic!

Faults:

Everything.

The electrics to the fuel pump burned through, so the car wouldn't start. This happened a total of three times.

The water drain just in front of the windscreen became blocked, which soaked the floor and came in as steam through the heating system.

It let me down in April, June, July, September, October and December. Once every two months. The final time was the head gasket, when I was advised to sell it by my mechanic. He said:

"The odometer might say it's done 99k, but since the head gasket's blown, it might as well have done 250k. Sell it, or you're just asking for trouble".

So I did.

General Comments:

OK, it's comfortable, reasonably quick for a diesel, but the engine is fairly loud and unrefined.

It handles OK, but has a tendency to slide, which is made worse by there being practically no feedback through the steering wheel.

The built-in stereo and speakers are terribly tinny, and if you lose the stereo code, Citroen charge £25 to find it for you.

This is my second Citroen - I thought I'd give them another chance after my first blew up. Never again. I'm sticking to Japanese or German!

In regard to the radio code issue. I popped in to S. E Thomas in Godalming(Surrey) and the service advisor gave me the code for free. What a nice man!
