2002 Fiat Punto GO 1.2

Summary:

You get what you pay for

Faults:

Headlights full of condensation during wet weather/washing.

Clicking clutch.

Problems getting petrol into tank.

General Comments:

Overall I love my Punto, and feel it was good value for money. I am disappointed in the headlight problem and the lack of support from the dealer and FIAT uk. Several adjustments of the lights and still no cure in sight.

The car looks good and handles well, but just wish it didn't take nearly 15 minutes to fill the tank of petrol!! I am told there is no faults!

2002 Fiat Punto Active Sport 1.2 8v

Summary:

A cheap, economical bargain of a car that is sure to please

Faults:

A couple of dash board rattles that were fixed under warranty without question. Also, the CD/radio would occasionally show an error message, but this has also been rectified under warranty being replaced with a new unit.

General Comments:

Cost £7,600 new with metallic paint and three years interest free payments. Great value for a new car and includes three years warranty.

It has the 1.2, 8 valve engine. OK, so it's no racer, but it's nippy enough for round town, and we have done over 12,000 miles in the first year of ownership.

Sculptured seats, silver look central dashboard, smart upholstery and an easy to read, modern display means it is a treat to live with. Everything feels 'solid' for such a small car too.

Very economical, regularly returning over 50mpg with ease. The first service only cost just over £100.00 as well, which was an added bonus.

Lots of headroom and enough legroom in the back for those of a lofty disposition not to feel too cramped. The boot is large enough for a reasonable amount of shopping as well.

The four door model is probably more versatile if the back seats are used regularly, as getting in and out of the back is a bit of a squeeze, and air conditioning would have been nice. At this price though, beggars can't be choosers.

Overall, a pleasing little car with a paint finish to put Citroen to shame if compared to their Saxo range. A pressure washer will not see paint flaking off of this car as it did the Citroen.

2002 Fiat Punto Sporting 1.2 16v petrol

Summary:

FIAT stands for Fix It Again Toni!

Faults:

Gearbox started leaking oil within a week of taking delivery. Dealer diagnosed a driveshaft seal which was changed twice, but didn't fix the problem. Eventually they found rough edges on the casting itself. Gearbox had to be replaced, after a 9 week wait for the part.

Various electrical gremlins. Central locking only works 25% of the time, brake lights flicker on and off.

Plastics creak and groan inside the car.

Passenger seat tilt handle snapped off.

Indicator stalk ceased to function.

General Comments:

Zippy 1200 cc engine and novel 6 speed gearbox in a neat handling, funky looking little package.

Unfortunately the painful ownership experience caused by Fiat's antediluvian quality control standards and incompetent dealers, eliminates Fiat from any consideration whatsoever when I am next in the market for a car. Seems nothing has changed since the bad old days.

Car owned: Fiat Punto 1.2 8v Active.

A well written review, which sums up so many of the problems I have encountered, including poor plastics, poor dealerships, and oil leaks.

The biggest bug-bear of my own car was the inability of the dealer to diagnose a clutch problem in the first 3 attempts (although finally solved with an entire new clutch)

My Drivers seat collapsed twice within the first 2 months, along with the nearside door card, both components were replaced, but I have since fitted a aftermarket eat as the new seat showed signs of the same problem!!

2002 Fiat Punto Active Sport 1.2

Summary:

Stylish value for money

Faults:

Condensation in the headlights.

Steering freezes up, both while driving and stationary, and becomes extremely difficult to maneuver.

General Comments:

The sporty interior not only makes for comfortable driving, but also gives this car a great stylish look.

The C. D player, 6 speakers and 100 Watt Sub woofer in the boot, make any song sound good.

The body colored bumpers give the illusion of a body-kit.

My wife owns a Active sport Punto, she also had a problem with the lights, fiat said it should have been re-called and replaced them under warranty, no problems since.

Jon.
