1992 Ford Escort XR3I 1.8I (105psi)

Summary:

A good, reasonably fast car, but a little expensive for day to day running

Faults:

The head gasket went after owing the car a month, this cost about £500 to repair.

The starter motor went about 6 months ago.

The starters were misfiring, then after standing over Christmas, refused to start and had to be towed to the garage.

General Comments:

Although I've had a few things go wrong with the car, and I know it's not the 130psi, I still like the car.

Even though it's had NO modifications at all, it's nippy enough to get me away from little boy racer speed freaks who think they can try and overtake me.

The handling is good, although some bends at high speeds feel as though you're only just managing to keep control of the car.

The interior, whilst basic, is comfortable, and the adjustable steering column allows even shorter people to feel at ease behind the wheel!

On the downside, the insurance and tax are high, and for day to day running to and from work, it does drink quite a lot of petrol.

1992 Ford Escort LX 1.6 CVH

Summary:

The working family car. Great

Faults:

Replaced rear shock absorbers due to knocking.

Changed starter motor.

Changed the camshaft and tappets at 102000 miles (Acquired a cheap set).

New brake pads recently.

Mid section of the exhaust failed, but not dramatically; it was changed quickly.

More recently, I acquired and fitted a set of front shock absorbers (cheap).

General Comments:

This car is not quick, but once you get it to motorway speeds it serves its purpose.

It likes a bit of a drink. I probably get around 33mpg (combined). But doing 50mph - 60mph all day I could probably get 45 - 50mpg.

The driving position is quite uncomfortable, especially when you drive 50+ miles a day.

Rust is starting to set in underneath, but the rest of the car is in very good condition! I'm very surprised!

Overall I'm pleased with my purchase, as its been a very, very reliable workhouse in all sorts of weather.

1992 Ford Escort XR3i 1.8 Injection (130 BHP)

Summary:

Not at all bad, but needs to be quicker!

Faults:

So far so good. I have had nothing go wrong with the car since I bought it a couple of months ago.

General Comments:

My car is totally original with only 38,000 miles on the clock which is great considering the car is eleven years old this year.

I am planning to strap on a Turbo and putting on the Cosworth Body Kit on the car.

As the car is now I am really happy with it, but is slightly underpowered compared to what I used to drive, I used to have the Fiesta XR2i 1.8i, but obviosly the car was smaller with the same engine as my Escort.

The car handles well and has a good ride quality, but I am planning to Lower the suspension slightly when I have put the body kit on so I hope not to upset the ride too much.

It should be noticeably quicker than your XR2i. Yes it has the same basic engine, but tuned to deliver about 20bhp more.

Are you sure you have a 130 version? The 105 and 130 engines look the same apart from the sticker on the inlet manifold, and these can easily be (and often get) swapped.

I am very happy with my xr3i I think the power is just right, it is not to quick, but it has the power to get rid of the boy racers that tail you.

Ford started the boy-racer, so what you goin on about, you if anyone are a boy-racer in your xr3.

1992 Ford Escort L 1.4

Summary:

A low cost reliable workhorse

Faults:

The hydraulic tappets required changing at 70,000 miles. This job was easy and cost £35 for the bits.

The clutch shudder, this is annoying.

General Comments:

This car is long geared, which affects performance a little. The benefit of this is good fuel return on long journeys.

This car is ideal for long journeys it will sit at 70 to 80 miles per hour comfortably.

If this car is serviced regularly the 1400cc engine is very good.
