1992 Ford Escort L 1.4

Summary:

Quality, reliable family car, but repetitive rusty arch problem lets it down

Faults:

Normal things needed renewing like battery etc. But we also needed to fit a new clutch and yet again as with all Escorts we have had the back arches that have become rusty, which is disappointing as this is a great car.

General Comments:

Great small family car. Great build quality and very comfortable to drive but when will Ford put the rear arches right, it really irritates me when they start to rust every time.

1992 Ford Escort Encore 1.6 CVH

Summary:

The worst car money can buy

Faults:

Engine keeps overheating, clutch started to go, brakes were poor.

General Comments:

The car was rubbish, I now have a Cavalier of an older year (1990) and find this much more reliable. I would also recommend anyone looking for a new shape Escort to modify stay away from this as the 1.6CVH was one of the last carb engines and therefore no one bothered to make performance parts for them. Also the car didn't have power steering and handled very poor, often lost traction when going round a roundabout.

1992 Ford Escort XR3i 16v 130 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Fuse box is prone to busting, also the light and indicator stalks.

Tyres wear very quickly due to no one actually knowing the correct setting. Trying to get parts is very difficult for the 130.

Front brake discs aren't at all standard on the 130.

Engine knocking noise.

General Comments:

Great first car, quite quick, nice looking mk5 version, a little expensive for what it is. Have dropped a body kit on it and everyone stares wherever I go. People always want to steal it, so if you get one keep it locked away. A fun car, just change the suspension.

I've owned an XR3i 130 for 2 years and the only problem I have had really is with the bottom ball joints, it seems to love destroying them every 6 months or so. Other than that, it's a great car, but unfortunately I've got to sell it as I am looking to buy a house. I will be sad to see it go.

1992 Ford Escort Popular 1.3 petrol

Faults:

2 new Clutches 40k and 70k.

New starter motor 70k.

3 new exhausts 36k 50k 70k.

New brake pads and shoes 45k.

Bought on a J-plate the car has aged rapidly, although no major faults. Bad grip around corners. Pretty fast for a 1.3, 100mph+ at 74k.
