1991 Ford Fiesta RS Turbo 1.6 turbo petrol

Summary:

Fastest hot hatch for the money!!!!

Faults:

I've had a lot of problems with this car due to the fact of taking it to a place where they don't know about turbo's, and it cost me a lot of money.

In the end after 2 blown engines, and two turbos I took it to "Power Engineering" and they sorted it right out and now (touch wood), I have had no problems and it is really fast...... My advice if you have one and wish to modify it, don't waste your time, go see the boys on 01895 255699.

General Comments:

Despite the money I have spent and the hassle I have had, I do not regret a penny I have spent. My car is now over 200bhp and there is no better feeling coming up behind a Sapphire Cossie and him thinking "Ha, crappy RS Turbo" and me making him think again, the respect you will get at the end of the road is great when he pulls you over saying what the hell is in that!!!!

Oh, nearly forgot, it pulls the women!!!!

1991 Ford Fiesta RS Turbo 1.6 turbo petrol

Summary:

Best cheap hot hatch!

Faults:

Had a problem with the inner CV joint falling apart!

General Comments:

The best car I've ever owned! When I stiffened up the suspension the thing handled like a dream with totally nautral handling, totally encouraging you to slide the car round any corner, and those Recaro's are priceless.

These cars are in a totally different league to those crappy XR2i's which I've also owned (briefly).

They do tend to cost 3 times the amount of a XR2i though, reasonable XR2i-1000 rs t-2500.

Yeah, but the thing there is, all you have to do with the fiesta turbo is exhaust, filter and chip and your churning out 165bhp, and when you got plenty of 300BHP+ 1600 CVH turbo's out there, how can the XR2i compete without forced induction, quite simply it can't.

1991 Ford Fiesta LX 1.4 CFI

Summary:

Check the car out thoroughly!

Faults:

When I got the car the head gasket was blown, needed 2 new pads, 2 new discs + 2 new drum cylinders. Also rust around the petrol cap (inherent problem with sub-'94 models). Car was leaking water through the front and back windscreen. Just had new trailing arms for front wheels (knocking noise over bumps). Rust now creaping up rear arches.

General Comments:

Although lots of problems, parts are relatively cheap and if you can find a set of 13" XR2i alloys for it then cornering is not a problem! Have got rust seen to twice and it keeps coming back, and there is still water coming in the footwells from somewhere. Heavy front tyre wear. Good fun car overall.

1991 Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.4 carb

Faults:

Creaky suspension, dodgy rear wiper and remote boot release. Rear window leaks.

Lots of rattles and squeaks.

Tappets get noisy despite following recommended service intervals. Also burns oil.

Less economical than expected.

Doesn't like reverse and clutch can get jerky, although this is probably near the end of its life at 65K.

General Comments:

Reasonably reliable. Has started first time for the 3 years that I've owned it. No major problems. Easy, cheap DIY maintenance.

Quite nippy when you really rag it, although strange power curve (no power at high revs).

Well equipped, e/w, c/l, heated front screen etc. although very unsupportive seats.

Old person image.

Don't put a sub in the boot, it shakes the whole car to bits!

1991 Ford Fiesta XR2i 1.6i petrol

Faults:

Fuel pump was the only expensive item(over £300 fitted) in 3 years.

Other than that just usual day to day stuff tyres, exhaust, wipers and bulbs.

General Comments:

Handles and goes faster than people would credit a "Fiesta".

Excellent fun in second gear, in the wet, spinning wheels at roundabouts and traffic lights without really trying.

1991 Ford Fiesta L Automatic 1.1 petrol

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Useful runabout spoilt only by lack of power steering. This makes parking or three point turns a real pain.
